Search and Rescue
HOPE—Aug. 23 around 2:12 p.m., trooper’s Soldotna dispatch received a call from an individual in Hope, reporting someone paragliding out of control before disappearing below the tree line just west of Hope. The caller expressed concern because the area is heavily wooded, and there is seemingly no safe place to land where the individual was descending.
Troopers responded to the area of Hope, and checked a trail in the area but were unable to locate the paraglider. AST Helo 3 responded to the area from Anchorage and checked the area, but no sign of a paraglider was found and the search was suspended. At about 7:03 p.m., Allen Hansen of Anchorage, age 42, called Girdwood troopers and stated that he had been paragliding near Hope earlier in the day and that he had heard troopers were looking for a paraglider. Based on a description of his chute, troopers were able to confirm that Hansen was the paraglider in question. Hansen stated that he had landed on the beach in the area and that he was uninjured.
