The following incidents were reported to Detachment E of the Alaska State Troopers.
Refusal to Submit to a Sobriety Test/Speeding/Drinking and Driving in a Safety Corridor/Littering: On Aug. 13 at approximately 7:12 p.m., a trooper conducted a traffic stop on a 1982 Camero for speeding and littering near mile 99 of the Seward Highway. An investigation revealed David Rudolph Walkonen, age 54 of Anchorage was impaired while driving his vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Walkonen was arrested and transported to Girdwood Post where he refused to provide a sample of his breath for chemical analysis. Walkonen was also charged for Refusal and was issued three citations for Speeding, Littering, and Drinking While Driving in a Safety Corridor. He was remanded to Anchorage Jail and held on $2000.00 cash bail.
Driving with a Suspended Driver’s License: On Aug. 16 at 10:50 p.m. Troopers arrested Andrew L. Mitchell, age 34 of Anchorage, on a $500 Anchorage Police Department warrant for contempt of court reference community work service. The original charge was driving while license suspended. Mitchell was contacted at a residence in the Girdwood area on an unrelated call. Mitchell was remanded to the Anchorage Jail.
Driving with a Suspended Driver’s License: On Aug. 19 at approximately 7:25 p.m. Troopers initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle, for speeding, at mile 99 of the Seward Highway. Investigation revealed the driver of the vehicle, Anthony J. Matika, age 28 of Big Lake, and was operating with a suspended driver’s license. Matika was arrested for DWLS and transported to the Girdwood AST Post for a bail hearing. Matika was released on his own recognizance. Matika was also issued a traffic citation for speeding within the highway traffic safety corridor.
DUI: On Aug. 24 at 1:55 p.m. a Trooper responded to the area of mile 77 of the Seward Hwy., following a REDDI report, and contacted James Cruz, age 52 of Anchorage. Following an investigation Cruz was arrested on the charges of DUI and NVOL. He was transported to and remanded at the Anchorage Jail with a $1,000.00 bail.
Driving while Driver’s License Revoked: On Aug. 25 at 6:20 p.m. Troopers arrested Steven B. Gloria, age 23 of Fairbanks, on a $500 warrant for failure to appear for arraignment. The original charge was Driving While License Revoked. Gloria was contacted as a passenger on a traffic stop in the Girdwood area. Gloria was remanded to the Anchorage Jail
Motorcycle Collision /Driving with a Revoked Driver’s License: On Aug. 25 at around 1:55 p.m. a Trooper responded to mile 4.5 of the Hope Hwy., along with Hope EMS and Girdwood Fire/EMS, for a report of an injury accident. An investigation revealed that Roy Kinney, age 52 of Anchorage, had been riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle behind 21 year old Elizabeth Romtvedt who was driving a full size Chevrolet Pickup. An unknown car in front of Romtvedt suddenly slowed causing her to brake aggressively. Kinney was unable to stop in time and struck the rear bumper of Romtvedt’s pickup and then went into the ditch. Romtvedt’s pickup did not sustain any damage. Kinney’s motorcycle sustained approximately $ 3,000 in damage. Kinney was transported to Providence Alaska Medical Center, for treatment of a leg injury, by Girdwood Fire/EMS. Further investigation revealed that Romtvedt’s Alaska operating license is in a revoked status. She was summons to appear in court on the charge of Driving with a Revoked Driver’s License and released at the scene.
Driving with a Suspended License/Speeding: On Aug. 26 at approximately 12:35 p.m. a Trooper conducted a traffic stop on a commercial motor vehicle near mile 99 of the Seward Highway for speeding 80 MPH in a posted 65 MPH zone. This
area is within the highway safety corridor. Following an investigation, the driver, Paul Haysmer Jr. age 42 of Huntsville, Arkansas, was summons to appear in court on the charge of Driving with a Suspended Drivers License. Haysmer was also cited for speeding and then released at the scene.
Over Limit Rock Fish: On Aug. 22 James Croak, 45, of Anchorage, was cited by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Girdwood Post, for going over his daily bag limit of non-pelagic rock fish. Bail is set at $130 at Anchorage District Court.
Failure to release snagged fish: On Aug. 25, Buck Unsderfer, 28, of Denver, CO was cited by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Girdwood Post, for failing to release two snagged Coho salmon in Portage Creek. Bail is set at $150 in Anchorage District Court.
Passing in a No Passing Zone/Operating without a Valid Operator’s License: On Aug. 26 at approximately 9:30 P.M., a Trooper from Girdwood conducted a traffic stop on a 2004 Kawasaki motorcycle near mile 103 of the Seward Highway for passing another vehicle in a no passing zone. Mile 103 of the Seward Highway is within the highway safety corridor. Following an investigation, Robert McConnell III, age 29 of Anchorage, was cited for passing in a no passing zone and summons to appear in court for not having a valid operator’s license.
Motor Vehicle Collision: On Aug. 28 at 4:10 p.m. Troopers responded to a single vehicle roll over at mile 90.5 Seward Highway near Girdwood. Investigation revealed Jacob Taylor Ziemer, age 15 of Girdwood, lost control of a 1998 Oldsmobile Bravada while driving southbound on the Seward Highway. The SUV skidded 180 degrees backwards into the northbound lane where the vehicle struck the ditch and rolled over. All occupants reported wearing their seat belts and had no injuries. The vehicle was totaled.
Warrant Arrest: On Aug. 31 at 11:30 p.m. Troopers arrested Dennis R. Straughn age 36 of Anchorage on two warrants. The first one was a $500 cash only warrant for Failure to Comply with Conditions of Probation on an original charge of Assault 4. The second warrant was a $1,000 warrant for Failure to Comply with ASAP (Alcohol Safety Action Program) on an original charge of Driving Under the Influence (DUI). Straughn was contacted on a traffic stop in the Girdwood area. Straughn was remanded to the Anchorage Jail.
Outstanding Warrant: On Aug. 31 at approximately 10:10 p.m. Troopers stopped a REDDI vehicle near mile 90 of the Seward Hwy near Girdwood. An investigation revealed the passenger, David Joseph Summerhays, age 20 of Anchorage, had an outstanding $1000 arrest warrant for Failure to Appear for Arraignment, original charge of theft IV. Summerhays was arrested and transported to Anchorage Jail where he was remanded into custody.
Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance: On Sept. 1 at approximately 7:25 p.m. Troopers contacted Melissa Anderson Nicholas, age 22 of Anchorage near mile 113 Seward Highway for a welfare check. Investigation revealed Nicholas was in possession of a small amount of marijuana. She was issued a summons to appear in court on the charge of Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance VI, and was released from the scene.
Outstanding Warrant /Failure to Show Proof of Insurance: On Sept. 1 at approximately 5:10 p.m. a Trooper contacted Thomas Butcher, age 56 of Homer, during a traffic stop for an equipment violation. Following an investigation, Butcher was arrested on an outstanding $250 arrest warrant for Failure to appear for arraignment with the original charge for Failure to Maintain Liability Insurance on his vehicle. Butcher was transported to and lodged at the Anchorage Jail. He was also cited for having a malfunctioning muffler and Failure to Show Proof of Insurance.
Outstanding Warrant: On Sept. 3 at 12:25 a.m. Troopers contacted Tabitha C. Williams, age 19 of Anchorage, as a passenger in a vehicle during a traffic stop near mile 94 of the Seward Highway. An investigation revealed Williams had an outstanding $100 arrest warrant for failure to satisfy a judgment on a Minor Consuming Alcohol conviction. Williams was arrested and transported to Anchorage Jail where she was remanded into custody.
Outstanding Warrant: On Sept. 3 at 1:22 a.m. Troopers arrested Logan A. Parsons age 18 of Trapper Creek on a $500 warrant for Failure To Appear for Trial Call. The original charge was Driving Without a Valid Operator License. Parsons was contacted on a traffic stop in the Girdwood area. Parsons was remanded to the Anchorage Jail.
DUI/Driving with a Revoked Driver’s License: On Sept. 4 at approximately 11:16 p.m. Troopers contacted Derek Hovanec, age 36 of Anchorage near mile 82 of the Seward Highway after his vehicle had been called in as the subject of a REDDI report. Following an AST investigation, Hovanec was arrested for DUI, Driving with a Revoked Drivers License, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child 1st Degree. Hovanec was transported to and remanded at the Anchorage Jail.
