The Hope/Sunrise Community Development Association is sponsoring a huge Family Fun Festival Saturday, Sept. 8 noon to 4 p.m. Many of the events will be held at the Hope Social Hall, on Main Street, and at the Hope Library grounds located at Second Street and A Street. The Hope School will be the “rain location” if necessary. Watch for signs at Palmer Creek Road to see if the location has been changed to the Hope School
Everyone from the Turnagain Arm area is invited and encouraged to join the Hope residents for this fall festival held to raise funds to cover the Hope Library’s fuel expenses for the up and coming winter. There will be fun activities for kids of all ages—young and older ones too.
Dryers Ice Cream has awarded the community enough ice cream for 100 servings. Hope will use this event to raise money for the Hope Library. For a small donation your portion of ice cream can be turned into pie-a-la-mode, into a banana split or with sprinkles on top. There will also be healthy hot dogs with all the fixings for sale.
Some of the events planned will be fun things to do like craft projects, decorate a cup cake, learn to bead, do crazy quilting. There will be First Aide training, along with a session on alternative energy, Fire Prevention, use of extinguishers and a guest appearance by Smoky the Bear. Learn how to pack a healthy school lunch, join in for a Funny Hat contest with prizes, a “Cookie Walk” where everyone will get a cookie and the winner will get a dozen cookies. At the Hope Library you find a huge garage sale and a bake sale will be located in the Library Gift Shop, and there will many prizes to win.
The plans to have a Family-Fun-Run have been postponed until next year. Everyone is invited to come join in on the fun and help raise funds for the Hope Library. Fall in Hope is beautiful time and this event will be a fun way to end the summer.
Kent Bowman, owner of Bowman’s Bear Creek Lodge/Café, reports that Jami “Grubstake” Biggers has returned to Hope to her family cabin. She and Lee Hall, from Tyler, Texas, are working on restoring the property. Jamie and Lee have just completed one-and-a-half years at the remote “WinterLake Lodge” and are a wonderful addition to the staff at Bowman’s. Chef Jamie has been preparing the dinner specials this season, and Lee has had a big hand in the continuing reservations.
In recent weeks, Lee has been running the Hope Highway training for his first marathon in which he recently placed 16th in a field of over 200 runners. Way to Go Lee! Lee’s advice to the kids out there? “It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock and roll.”
Rochelle Morris, owner of Alaska Dacha would like to extend her appreciation for everyone’s patience while the upgrades to the property were completed over this past year or so. The RV Park now has full hooks up and the motel will be open all winter. Winter hours for the store will begin on Thursday, Sept. 6. Each day the store will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Then starting on Monday, Sept. 17 the store will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays until next spring.
Sourdough Dru’s on Main Street will be closing her gift shop for the winter Sept. 20 and looks forward to reopening her gift shop next spring.
The Girdwood Clinic is now scheduling appointments for a clinic here in Hope for Saturday, Sept. 22. The clinic will be open 9 a.m. to noon. Please call the clinic at 783-1355 to schedule your appointment so your records will be brought to Hope for that appointment.
The Hope Library Book Club will be meeting the last Thursday of each month beginning Sept. 27. The first book is “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini. Oct. 25 the club will be discussing “Runaway”—short Stories by Alice Munro. These books and the others, on the list, are available in the library. There is a list of the dates and books posted in several locations. Beth Kaser, Gail Dalrymple and Bianca Durrant are the volunteers in charge this winter. Mark your calendar and plan to attend as often as possible.
The Hope/Sunrise Historical Society held a Walking Tour: Patterns of Hope as part of their Aug. 18 General Membership meeting. Diane Olthuis discussed mass, size and orientation of early Hope cabins. As Hope was a mining town, cabin building was a winter activity. With photos, Diane described how early Hope residents pitched a tent, fortified it with log walls, and then pulled the tent out in the spring.
The Museum closed their regular hours the end of Labor Day Weekend. Ann Miller has volunteered to have the museum open on Saturday Sept. 8 for the Ice Cream-Family Fun Festival day. The museum will only be open on request until Sept. 15 at which time there will be a “Museum Clean-up Day” to get the museum readied for winter. The museum will re-open next year on Memorial Day weekend.
The Food Bank pantry will continue through the fall and winter to provide basic food provisions to those members of our community that may have a need. The food bank is open Wednesdays 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Those folks needing to take advantage of the food pantry, outside the regular hours, please contact either Tom Burgin (350-1318) or Joyce Burgin (830-5307). If you are in need of food, please come utilize this free service. The free community breakfast, sponsored by the Hope Church, is scheduled to begin early October.
