Energy check can be used to help community projects

To the Editor:
By the time this addition of the Turnagain Times comes out, we will be days away from receiving an unexpected windfall from the state in the form of both our annual permanent fund and the added bonus of the energy assistance funds. Every one of us will see that check arriving in our accounts.
It is at this time, that most of us think about how to use that money. With regards to the energy assistance, I would like to see my energy assistance to be used in some way to better our community. In looking at the opportunities in Girdwood to grow our town, I see a long standing desire to bring the skate park to a better level. I see this as an opportunity to harness the incredible energy of our community youth. I for one, intend to donate my $1,200 to the skate park improvement. If you have an interest in our kids (mine are grown but still nearby), this is the Perfect Financial Storm to bring the skate park much closer to reality and to rival the wonderful Children s Park that the community created.
There are many opportunities to contribute to our community and needs that we can all see. We certainly hope that our state government might recognize some of those needs and help with the funding of need community improvements but we must first look to our own recourses and demonstrate our commitment to our community. I urge all that can afford it, to invest in our town. It is what makes it the great place that it is in which to live and raise our kids!
