The Hope/Sunrise Community Development Association sponsored a Family Fun Festival Saturday Sept. 8. It was a huge success raising $1,318 in much needed funds for the Hope Community Library’s expected winter fuel costs.
Due to a very rainy day all the events were held at the Hope School. Along with Hope residents, folks attended the Family Fun Festival from as far away as Palmer and all the way from Homer. Many brought their children to join in the activities.
Some of those activities included a Cookie Walk with each child getting a cookie while the winner received a dozen cookies. Even Smokey Bear made a guest appearance and joined the children in the Cookie Walk but decided to save his cookie until a bit later. Smokey Bear was a highlight as he posed for pictures that afternoon.
Thanks to Dryers Ice Cream who awarded the community enough ice cream for 100 servings. The ice cream was free while there was a charge for the toppings, makings for banana splits or pie-al-a-mode. It was not surprising that there wasn’t any of yummy ice cream left by the end of the afternoon. The children who entered the Funny Hat contest sure had fun creating some very interesting hat for their parade. Most events lasted about 45 minutes each and the children enjoyed the variety of activities.
The library wishes to extend their appreciation to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center for its donations to their garage sale held in the hallway at the school. Items donated included shopworn clothes, jewelry, & art objects. A heartfelt thank-you to Herthel Stephens of the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center for these donations. All in all, it was a busy fun-filled day for all those who helped to make this a great fund raiser.
The Hope Community Library volunteers will have the library open this winter on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. There are new books, new DVDs, books-on-tape, much more. The residents are encouraged to let Susan Anderson know if there is something that would be a good addition to the library.
The Hope School students will be making a three day field trip to the Mat-Su Valley the last week in September. This trip is in place of the field trip that had to be canceled last spring. Some of the activities will include a visit to the Musk 0x farm, the Reindeer Farm, Iditarod Headquarters and a possible visit to the Tsunami Warning Center.
The Hope School PTA will be meet at 3:15 p.m. Sept. 20. Officers elected at the last spring PTA meeting include President Lennie Yoter, Vice President Beth Kaser, Gina Motoyama Treasurer and Barb Bureau Secretary. The 2007 PTA dues will be the same as in the past. The dues are $10 for the first family member and $5.75 for an additional family member. All Hope residents are invited, and encouraged, to join the PTA to help support our school students.
Work on revising the Hope phone list should be completed by late September. If you know of any corrections or additions, please contact Fayrene Sherritt at 782-3436. Once the list is complete, it will be available at the Hope Post Office. This year’s paper color will be ivory and will replace the current pink phone list.
The Hope/Sunrise APC met on Sept. 6 at the Hope Social Hall. The tentative design for the Area 12 sub-division was discussed with a recommendation for direct access from Palmer/Resurrection Creek Road to Palmer Creek Road. It was further recommended that the Forest Service be involved with the KPB Planning Department regarding the access to Palmer Creek Road. The KPB Planning Department is still working on the final stages of the development of Area 22 and Area 12 sub-division plans. The minutes and agendas for the next Hope/Sunrise APC meeting, scheduled for Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the Hope Social Hall, are posted at the Post Office, Alaska Dacha, Library, and Tito’s.
The Girdwood Clinic is now scheduling appointments for a clinic here in Hope for Saturday, Sept. 22. The clinic will be open 9 a.m. to noon. Please call the clinic at 783-1355 to schedule your appointment so your records will be brought to Hope for that appointment.
The Food Bank pantry will continue through the fall and winter to provide basic food provisions to those members of our community that may have a need. The food bank is open Wednesdays 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Those folks needing to take advantage of the food pantry, outside the regular hours, please contact either Tom Burgin (350-1318) or Joyce Burgin (830-5307). If you are in need of food, please come utilize this free service. The free community breakfast, sponsored by the Hope Church, is scheduled to begin early October.
