HAZ MAT TRAINING

Girdwood Fire Dept. volunteers participated in a State of Alaska Firefighting Certification 2 class, which involves hands on and classroom training. In addition to the 92 hour certification, Girdwood firefighters have the regular daily training and continuing education throughout the year.
The Alaska State Troop ers reported the following incidents. Any charges reported are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

 

Motor Vehicle Collision

GIRDWOOD—On Sept. 3 at approximately 11:38 a.m. troopers responded to a motor vehicle collision near Mile 71 of the Seward Highway. An investigation determined that a 2007 Toyota van, driven by Bin Chen, age 35 of Sheng Hai, China was traveling northbound when he hydroplaned, lost control of the vehicle, and struck the guardrail. The driver and all passengers reported wearing their seatbelts and having no injuries. The vehicle sustained approximately $5,000 in damages. The damage to the guardrail was estimated at approximately $3,000.

Motor Vehicle Crash/Injury

COOPER LANDING—On Sept. 6 at 8:14 p.m., a Trooper from Girdwood responded to the report of a motor vehicle crash with injuries at mile 40 of the Sterling Highway. An investigation revealed that Dale Wiggins, age 49 of Anchorage, had been traveling north on the Sterling Highway near mile 40 with his fourteen year old son, Joshua Wiggins. Wiggins’ 1996 Subaru sedan began to hydroplane due to excessive speed and water on the roadway. The vehicle left the roadway to the right and impacted the tree line destroying the vehicle and injuring Joshua’s right leg. He was transported to Central Peninsula Hospital by Cooper Landing EMS for treatment of his injuries. Dale will be cited for negligent driving.

Vehicle Collision

GIRDWOOD—On Sept. 9 at around 10 p.m. Troopers responded to a motor vehicle collision near Mile 109 of the Seward Highway. An investigation determined that a 2004 Chevrolet sedan driven by Naim Gribaa, age 46 of Sitka, was traveling northbound when his vehicle hit a rock on the highway causing his vehicle to spin out of control and hit a rock wall. The driver and passenger reported wearing their seatbelts. The driver reported no injuries. The passenger was transported by paramedics for non-life threatening injuries to an Anchorage area hospital. The vehicle was a total loss and was towed from the scene by a local tow company.
