Holton Hills Subdivision infrastructure approved

At its July 21 meeting, the Girdwood Board of Supervisors voted to approve the water improvement and infrastructure plans for the Holton Hills Subdivision and Crow Creek Neighborhood 3-0 with two board members absent. Board member John Gallup reported that HLB, AWWU and ASD were in agreement that the plan aligning the subdivision road with Glacier Creek was the best possible design to fit the needs of both AWWU and the subdivision, itself.

South Townsite Plan in final review stages

The Girdwood South Townsite Master Plan is in the final review stages and will be voted on by the Land Use Committee at their next meeting on Aug. 11 and presented to the Girdwood Board of Supervisors on Aug. 18 with plans for a GBOS vote at the September meeting. Little Bears receives donation for new facility

Little Bears Board Member Karen Zaccaro receives two checks totaling $3,000 from Jeff Demain and Eileen Demain representing Girdwood 2020. The funds will be used to support ongoing programs at Little Bears including staff development and training and also to contribute to the Capital Fund for the New Little Bears facility. The current building is aging and does not adequately provide for the needs of the program. It is scheduled for eventual demolition.

Former Girdwood residents welcome new baby

On June 5, 2008 Gentry Marcus Love Plummer was born at home in Wasilla, AK to Parents Josephine Love & Ray Plummer III & sisters: Azaria, Ashenta, Kytira, Sequoia. Gentry is a healthy 8 lbs. 2 oz. The Plummers lived in Girdwood for seven years before moving away a few years ago.

Girdwood Lion’s Club hosts annual Humpy Fest Aug. 16

The Girdwood Turnagain Arm Lion’s Club is hosting its Tenth Annual Humpy Fest Aug. 16. The pot will be split between a pink salmon fishing derby, rubber ducky races, and flying fish toss. This is the Girdwood Lion’s Club main fund raising event of the year. The funds raised by the event are used to support community projects, which include numerous scholarships for area youth, Christmas Baskets for the needy, highway and park clean-up, the Girdwood end of school picnic, and the club’s annual Bicycle Safety Bonanza.

Girdwood realtors complete specialty training

Glacier City Realty’s Sam Daniel, broker, and Rebecca Reichlin, licensee, have successfully completed the Seniors Real Estate Specialist training. The Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES) designation is awarded to realtors who successfully complete the required education course focused on serving real estate buyers and sellers who are aged 55 and older. The SRES designation is the only one of its kind recognized by the National Association of Realtors.

Vacation Bible School attendees raise funds for Fire Station

During the course of Girdwood Chapel’s Vacation Bible School July 8-11 at Glacier City Hall over $500 was raised to help fund a thermal imagining camera for the Girdwood Fire Department. This VBS program was led by a team from Zionsville, Indiana along with many helpers from the Girdwood Community. To learn about local heroes, they met some fire fighters and got a tour of the local fire department. Each night the children filled a firefighter’s boot with loose change to go towards the thermal imager.

Whittier Halibut Derby runs through Labor Day

The Whittier Halibut Derby, a slot weight derby, is already underway, running through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1. The slot weight for July was 60 to 80 pounds and the slot weight for August is 40 to 60 pounds. There is also a season winner for largest fish. The current leader weighs in at 145.2 pounds. In addition to the slot weight derby, youth under 16 get their chance to lure a prize catch during the one-day Small Fry Silver Salmon Derby, Saturday, Sept. 13 from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The annual youth derby includes two divisions age 10 and younger and ages 11-15. First, second and third place cash prizes will be awarded to contestants in each division for the heaviest fish.

Tickets on sale for Fungus Fair Formal Sept. 5

Tickets are now on sale for the Girdwood Fungus Fair formal dinner and live auction on Sept. 5 at the Hotel Alyeska. Tickets may be purchased at the Alyeska tram ticket office or at the Girdwood Forest Service Building. The menu will include five courses featuring mushrooms in a variety of preparations. Tickets are $50. The dinner wraps up day one of the three-day event, which is scheduled to include a variety of talks, presentations and workshops, a fun run, and a screening of the 1963 classic Japanese horror film, Attack of the Mushroom People.
