Board of Supervisors News

By Nick Danger
GBOS Chairman

Well, we have had a couple of very interesting months here in Girdwood for the GBOS and here is where we stand.
Nick Danger is the Chairman and Public Safety Supervisor, Jim Henderson is the Roads Supervisor, Jake Thompson is the Land Use Supervisor, Tim Cabana is the Utilities Supervisor and John Gallup is the Parks and Recreation Supervisor. During the summer months we slowed down quite a bit with vacations, fishing and visiting summer guests. The work on the new library/community center is going well everyone should go by and check it out. The city center project has been put on hold and will not get done till next summer, which is unfortunate but uncontrollable. The LUC has stayed busy this summer with the construction season.
There will be a lot on GBOS plate this fall and it will affect everyone that lives here so it would be nice to see you all at one of the meeting we have every month, the Trails committee meets the first Tuesday of the month, the LUC meet the second Tuesday of the month and the GBOS meets the third Monday of the month. Please come out and see what is happening in our community and make some new friends.
In conclusion, I would like to say thank you to all the people who volunteer so much of their time for no pay to help make this community a great place to live. Volunteerism is the one trait the makes America the greatest country in the world and Girdwood is tops for community volunteers lets keep up the good work and remember “service above self” those are great words to live by.

Volunteers from Ameri-Corps work along Alyeska Highway picking the invasive weed, Orange Hawk, also known as the devil's paint brush. The bright red weed is pervasive in the valley and chokes out native species. Two volunteer teams of seven membrs each are working in Girdwood for the next month. They will also be doing trail maintenance in the area.

A "Celebration of Life" for former Girdwood Postmaster Connie Hibbs was held July 14 in the Kahiltna Court at Alyeska Resort. A standing room only crowd filled the room. There was a slide show presentation documenting Connie's life and afterwards relatives and friends shared stories about Connie, followed by a potluck dinner. Connie worked at the Girdwood Post Office for 25 years. Her mother, Dorothy, also worked there for 25 years and served as Postmaster. Connie passed away March 3 at the age of 63.
