Pioneer Liquor and Gas opens again for business
For the past two years Hope’s only gas station, Pioneer Liquor and Gas owned by the Davidson family, has been closed. Megan and Dean Davidson recently moved to Hope and reopened the family business July 3. They are open Thursday through Mondays 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. with extended hours on Friday and Saturday closing at midnight. Both the gas and liquor store will be closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The Tesoro station is located almost at the end of the Hope Highway just before the Porcupine campground entrance. A contact number is 952-8606.
Future plans include getting a new pump with a credit card slide to replace their old pump so gas will be available 24 hours. Until a new phone line has been installed, credit card payments will not be available. The new phone line should be installed before the end of July with the new pump “down the road.” Many nice comments have been made to them expressing the community’s appreciation that the gas is once again available in Hope.

Hope’s newest baby born—it’s been 28 years since the last local birth
June 30 at 8:02 a.m., Shyla Malone and Andy Schell, became parents of a baby boy and their third child. With the help of four Hope gals, and before Medivac could arrive, Caden Terell arrived after just five hours of labor. Both mother and baby are home and doing well.
Twenty-eight years ago, Guy and Laura Trimmingham gave birth to their daughter Farrar (Trimmingham) Startz. When Farrar was eight the family was living in Seward and as a young gal, Farrar was volunteering at the Wesleyon Home where she remembers meeting an older woman who told her she had been born 50 years earlier in 1910-1911. All Farrar remembers is that her first name was Mable. Most expectant mothers moved closer to the hospital when their time grew closer so having a baby born in Hope has been pretty rare.
In 1982 Dean Davidson was almost born in Hope, however almost at the last moment, and just before he was born, his mother was flown into Anchorage where he was born at the end of the air strip on the way to Regional Hospital.

Hope Inc. ballots and correction
In the last issue, part of the report on the June 25 special meeting of Hope Inc. was incorrect. The members voted to accept the new Hope Cemetery policies presented from the Cemetery committee and no further vote was required. A committee to oversee the Hope Cemetery will be appointed by Hope, Inc. I incorrectly reported that a ballot was recently mailed to current Hope, Inc. members to approve the cemetery policies.
However, vote of the membership was not about the cemetery but about changing the day of the month the meetings are held. If approved, the vote would allow the president to pick the day of the week for the quarterly meetings instead of the required 3rd Saturday night.
This change requires a two-thirds vote to pass. This ballot was mailed to all Hope Inc. members and all are encouraged to return the ballots as soon as possible. It is not to late to return them. If you have not gotten a ballot and believe you are a member of Hope, Inc., please contact Rochelle Morris.
The Kenai Peninsula Borough has exchanged the old style dumpsters for two new styled trash containers at the Land Transfer site. The new style is designed to keep bears out of the trash containers. Any hazardous materials are still required to be taken to the Kenai Landfill for disposal.
The three fish cleaning tables have been installed with one under the bridge and two near the mouth of Resurrection Creek. The public restrooms should be functional by mid July just in time for the Wagon Trail events held on July 18 & 19 and completely finished later in the summer.

Alaska Statehood Quilt on display in Hope’s Social Hall
Earlier this year quilters around the State created large quilt blocks representing what Statehood and Alaska meant to them. Many were submitted from all around the State with the Kenai Peninsula quilters creating the largest number from one region.
The quilt is enormous and is comprised of nine panels with six to seven quilt blocks each. Each panel averages 5’ x 8’, the entire quilt covers over 350 square feet. All nine panels will be on display in the Hope Social Hall July 18 and 19 during the Wagon Trail activities. Look for the Alaska Statehood Quilt booklet which be available for sale for $10. The booklet provides photos of the quilt panels, their stories and the folks who created them.
