The Primary session, 10 a.m. to noon at Challenge Alaska, for students ages 5-8 years of age, begins with a guided drawing lesson, and then on to two different media each day. Students will explore the art of stained glass at Jim Kaiser’s studio, make their own rhythm instruments, and experiment with different drawing and painting techniques. Directors Sarah & Katie Cronk have colorfully creative ideas that include making kaleidoscopes and creating color puzzles.
The Intermediate session, 1:00 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Glacier City Hall, for students ages 9-18, begins with whole group drawing lessons, which build on individual abilities. Students break into two groups and begin the days’ creative project. Working with artists from Girdwood and Anchorage who bring special skills to share with our students. This year the cast of instructors includes Jim Kaiser, stained glass, Chris Cupp, digital photography, Catherine Senungetuk, watercolor painting, Anda Saylor, fiber art, Jessie Williams, oil portraiture painting, and Kayla Spaan, performance art. Directors Jimmy Riordan and Brigid Bourque have exciting ideas for making this a well-rounded program.
An alternative for teens is the Radio Drama Intensive, which is scheduled for July 27-31 at KEUL studio in Girdwood, for ages 12-18. This workshop will engage students with audio storytelling in the tradition of old time radio and the new age of podcasts. Rosey Robards, Director of the Alaska Teen Media Institute, and KEUL’s Karen “Flower Girl” Montegue will guide and inspire participants to conceptualize and develop a radio broadcast. Guest instructor, Alice Welling will be on hand to show students how to produce special sound effects. Teens will have the exciting opportunity to create, write act and perform in a radio drama that will air from the local Girdwood radio station, KEUL 88.9 FM.
Arts Camp was established in 1987 to foster natural artistic talents by providing young people instruction in the craft and technique of the fine arts. Our students collaborate with professional artist/instructors who are chosen for their ability to inspire and bring out the best in students. The finest quality art materials are used, and our student/teacher ratio is 1:6.
Parents and townspeople will be treated to very special Exhibition of Students’ Work at the finale on Friday July 31, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Be sure to come out and see the show!
