O’Brady’s Jalapeno and Chili Burgers with Fries. That’s heaven!

We’ve had glorious weather in Alaska this year, and summer has just begun. Get out for sunset on the Coast Trail.
The Anchorage Zoo is a beautiful place to visit and take the family. I went on a perfect day and the animals were out sunning themselves, grooming, and taking naps. The highlight for me was the Amur Tigers. The zoo houses two brothers from the Syracuse zoo. They were born there, but the Syracuse Zoo didn’t have enough room for them. The tigers that were here at the Anchorage Zoo passed away, so now we have the brothers. Yay! I also delighted in seeing the snow leopards, lynx, Arctic fox, and bears.
The zoo can be depressing to some people, because the animals are caged. It may seem cruel and unnatural, but the Anchorage Zoo has a great mission and they take good care of the animals that live there. The Mission states that the zoo is promoting the conservation of arctic, sub-arctic and like climate species. The Anchorage Zoo is a non-profit, private organization. More than half of the animals that live there were rescued, abandoned, injured, or orphaned. The admission fee and donations are used to provide funding for animal care and programs at the zoo.
The day I was there, two bear cubs had been recently rescued. They are temporarily in the old elephant house until they’re moved to the cub facility, which is being repaired. Later this summer, the cubs will move to their new home at The Memphis Zoo, so go and see the little darlings while they’re here.
The zoo is open year round. January-February: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., March-April 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., May1-September 14: 9 a.m - 6 p.m. From Memorial Day to Labor Day on Tuesday and Thursday the zoo is open until 9 p.m. and Fridays there’s the Live Music Series at 7 p.m., and June 26 is the Great Lander’s—the Air Force Band of the Pacific. The new Gateway Building is also hosting yoga classes Tuesday and Thursday at 9 a.m. And if you want to go somewhere special for Solstice, the Zoo will be open until midnight! Admission is $12 for adults, $9 for seniors/military, $6 for youth 3-17, and under 3 is FREE! The Alaska Zoo is located at 4731 O’Malley Road.
As I graze my way through Anchorage, I always look for friendly places with good food and great atmosphere. I liked O’Brady’s Burgers and Brew. It’s casual, clean and comfortable. The waitress was funny, and efficient. The beer was served perfectly, and the jalapeno burger with fries was tasty. O’Brady’s 6901 East Tudor Road, 907 338-1080.
A theatrical extravaganza now playing in Anchorage is Hullabaloo at Cyrano’s. Created and performed by Alice Welling, one of Alaska’s favorite entertainers. This is a multimedia, musical comedy about the evolution of Alaska. Hosted at Cyrano’s Playhouse through June 28 call for tickets and info at: 907 274-2599. Cyrano’s 413 D Street.
