Let the summer celebrations begin! Alaskans are fortunate to have so many choices for fun. I’ve just returned from an adventure in the Lower 48, and I can assure you that Alaska is it.
Friends of Alaska Bluegrass is my favorite group on Facebook this week. It’s all about Alaskan Bluegrass and is a venue for music lovers to share information. It’s an open group and anyone can join. Kari Anderson Bailey is the heart and creator of Friends of Bluegrass and I think she’s the Bees Knees. Friends of Bluegrass are gearing up for the Trapper Creek Bluegrass Festival. This historic summer festival usually kicks off the season in Alaska, and is held on Boot’s Bison Ranch. Boot’s also happens to be in the ‘Big’ band, The Spenard Satans Old Timey Club House Band. It’s the most eclectic conglomeration of fun loving, hard playing, good time having, make you want to dance country band that I’ve seen in many moons! The Satans also happen to be performing at the festival.
It starts Friday, May 22, and the party continues through Sunday, May 24. Check out the Trapper Creek Bluegrass website and get more information.
The Spenard Roadhouse is the newest eatery by the owners of Sacks and Snow City Café. When you think of a Roadhouse you may think greasy spoon, but there’s no grease here. It’s meant to be, “a neighborhood gathering place.” The local beers on draft, fresh squeezed lemonade, and flights of small batch bourbon are delightful. They’re threatening a Pig Off, but I’d settle for a Chicken Fried Steak.
1049 West Northern Lights Boulevard 907 770-7623(ROAD). Open 11a.m. to 11p.m., seven days a week.
For an evening of theatrical belly dance that is swinging hips for a good cause, enjoy Ancient Myths and Legends. It’s a fundraiser for the Abused Women’s Aid (AWAIC) in Crisis Shelter. The performance is May 30, 8 p.m. at the Wendy Williamson Auditorium, 3211 Providence Drive. Tickets are available at Center Tix.
The BoDeans are playing First Tap June 4, 9 p.m. at The Bear Tooth Theatre, 1230 W. 27th. I love The BoDeans and even thought the price for tickets is $30.00, I think hearing them play “Every Day” live would be worth it. Tickets are available at the box office or on the web.
The Anchorage Market & Festival is back in full force every Saturday and Sunday. It’s a great place to shop for fresh food from local farmers, take in the free entertainment, and browse the quality goods from Alaskan artisans. Enjoy the culture, people watching, and simply strolling by more than 300 booths. The Market runs through Sept. 13, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. It’s located at Third Avenue & E Street Parking Lot.
