Chili contest raises money for youths

Sunday, May 3, at the Girdwood Fire House, Girdwood Chapel sponsored a Chili contest to raise money to send five youths to SIFAT Camp in Lineville, Alabama. These youth, Marina Graham, Ben Daniel, Aleah DeNuptiis, Hannah Chandler and Samuel Doepken will experience developing countries that are less fortunate, and people that are less fortunate, and service to others.
“It will help them understand their world and their place in it,” said Jim Doepken, pastor at Girdwood Chapel.
Money raised at the Chili contest had many categories, one was to cut Benjamin Daniel’s hair that was last cut in October. The highest bidder was the first to cut Ben’s hair. Sam Daniel bid $45 to cut his son’s first lock, while mom, Loretta Daniel looked on remembering his first hair cut.
Other money was raised by “tip jar’s” in front of each chili container. The highest amount won the People’s Choice, Don Johnson of Girdwood. Best Vegetarian Chili winner was, Mike Smith and his assistant, Kassi Grunder. Best Meat Chili aware went to Marlene Buccione-Miller of Indian.
