Don’t miss these upcoming events sponsored by Four Valleys Community School.
The annual Girdwood school play will be presented May 6 & 7 at 7:00 p.m. at the Girdwood School. This year’s play is King Artie and the Knights of the Rad Table.
Girdwood Turnagain Lions Club and Four Valleys Community School, Inc. are sponsoring two $750 scholarships for graduating Four Valleys high school seniors. Criteria for the Four Valleys Community Service Scholarship are community service, leadership, evidence of personal growth and finalist interview. Applications include a biographical sketch, three letters of recommendation, statement of purpose and official transcript of classes, and are due by Friday, April 10 at 5 p.m. at the FVCS office. Graduating high school seniors who are residents of the Four Valleys area are encouraged to apply.
We are sponsoring Artist-in-Residence Meghan Holtan April 13-23, who will delight students with the Anchortown Circus. The community is invited to attend a Juggle Jam on Thursday, April 16 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the Girdwood School Gym. Meghan will be teaching the students various circus performance activities during school hours, and there will be a Show and Potluck on Thursday, April 23, again from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Girdwood School.
Moving in to summer: current Assistant Coordinator Catherine McDermott will lead FVCS through the summer. Lana Carse will return as the Lead Summer Playground leader. Summer Playground is a fun, creative, recreational youth summer program for ages 3-7. Please call 742-5317 for more information.
Girdwood Primary Science Camp, M-F, July 13-17 is for children going into grades 1-3. Campers explore ecosystems from valley streams to alpine areas, wade through creeks to collect macro-invertebrates, hike through wetlands, investigate predator-prey relationships, identify Girdwood birds and more. These and many other adventures await the lucky science campers. Camp fee is $200.
Intermediate Science Camp, June 22-27 is for youth going into grades 4-6. They will attend residential camp in Homer and Katsitsna Bay and explore diverse tidal pools, ecosystems in the coastal forest, animal tracking and natural history. And they will cook their own food. Visits and activities include the Islands and Oceans Center and Pratt Museum. Round trip bus transportation to and from Homer is included in the camp fee of $400. You can register online right now for Science Camp by going to www.fourvalleys.org to print the forms necessary to mail in payment and registration.
The very popular Four Valleys Summer Soccer Program will continue to offer local youth an outstanding option for summer time. Look for specific dates and info coming soon.
Additional, indoor/outdoor recreational activities for elementary and junior high youth are being planned. For adults: Aerobics? Yoga? Stay tuned! Registration for FVCS Summer programs is tentatively scheduled to be held at the Girdwood School on April 29 from 4:30-8:00 p.m. Girdwood Fine Arts-Primary and Intermediate Camps registration is handled directly by Girdwood Fine Arts camp staff.
Four Valleys Community School, Inc. is striving to provide a wide range of class opportunities, activities, and community enrichment year round. Your input and involvement is welcome. The Four Valleys Advisory Board meets once per month and meetings are open to the public. Join us!
Last but not least, mark your calendars for the annual Volunteer Appreciation Barbecue Sunday, June 7 from 5-7 p.m. at the Marlow Pavilion. Four Valleys Community School, Inc. will hold a short, general business meeting to bid adieu to some of our Board Members, and welcome new ones; please be there to show your support for their service. All local non-profit organizations are invited to support and participate in this event. Please nominate someone you know who deserves to be recognized for his/her overall volunteer service to our community. Two overall awards for Community Service will be presented; nomination forms are available at the post office or at the FVCS office. Additional awards are given by local non-profit organizations, to recognize those outstanding contributions made by volunteers within their organization.
