Alaskan Paralympic athlete and mono-skier Joe Tompkins from Juneau will be the featured athlete at the BlazeSports Alaska Winter Sports Clinic this March in Girdwood.
According to Jeff Dick, BlazeSports Alaska program coordinator, “The goal of the clinic is to provide athletes with disabilities instruction and coaching to improve their skills in both alpine skiing and wheelchair basketball. Having an elite athlete like Joe Tompkins assist with this event raises the level of instruction that we can provide and adds the element of mentorship for the recreational athlete, as well as the Paralympic hopeful.”
The clinic will be held March 22-23 and feature alpine skiing, on the slopes of the Alyeska Resort, and wheelchair basketball at Girdwood Elementary. All athletes will have the opportunity to spend one day in each sport, learning and practicing elements that relate to that particular sport, training techniques and tips to improve performance, and receive information about sports nutrition.
BlazeSports Alaska is one of the programs offered by Challenge Alaska in partnership with BlazeSports America. Challenge Alaska recently launched the BlazeSports Alaska program, part of a national network of programs that provide sports and recreational opportunities for youth and adults who use wheelchairs, have a visual impairment, amputation, or neurological disability such as cerebral palsy or spina bifida. Participant ages for the clinic range from 12 years through adulthood.
