Trooper Report

The Alaska State Troopers reported the following incidents. Any charges reported are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Motor Vehicle Collision

SEWARD HWY—Jan. 16 at around 3 p.m., Troopers responded to a single vehicle collision at Ingram Creek on the Seward Highway. Troopers contacted Joy Michaud, age 57 of Seward. Michaud was driving North on the highway when she lost control of her vehicle and hit the guardrail. No injuries were reported at the time but Michaud was transported to Alaska Regional Hospital by Girdwood EMS for further evaluation. Road conditions were icy at the time.

Motor Vehicle Collision

BIRD—Jan. 16 at approximately 2:27 p.m., Troopers responded to the intersection of the Seward Highway and Sawmill Road, which is near mile 101 of the Seward Highway, for the report of a two vehicle collision. An investigation revealed Chantz Gaither, age 22 of Anchorage, was driving South on the Seward Highway in a silver 2003 Dodge Durango. Gaither lost control of his vehicle, crossed the center line and struck a blue 2006 Dodge pickup that was driven by John Hopkins, age 65 of Cordova. Hopkins was driving North on the Seward Highway. All persons reported wearing their safety belts and received no injuries. Alcohol was not a factor. Damage to the Dodge pickup was estimated at $7,000 and the Durango was a total loss. Gaither was issued a Minor Offense Citation.

Motor vehicle crash, damage

GIRDWOOD—Jan. 18 at around 5:30 p.m., Troopers responded to Crow Creek Road in Girdwood for the report of a motor vehicle crash involving two vehicles. The crash investigation revealed Mason A. Perry, age 24 of Anchorage, was operating an early 90s station wagon type passenger car traveling northbound towards the Alyeska Highway. Alexander P. Davidson, age 27 of Anchorage, was operating a late model station wagon type passenger car traveling southbound. The roadway was narrow due to snow berms on both sides of the roadway. Perry’s vehicle side swiped Davidson’s vehicle. Perry’s vehicle sustained minor damage. Davidson’s vehicle sustained more than $500 damage. Davidson’s vehicle was towed from the scene.

Motor Vehicle Collision

GIRDWOOD—Jan. 19 at around 1:27 p.m., Troopers responded to a single vehicle rollover near mile 88 of the Seward Highway near Girdwood. An investigation revealed Crista l. Tritz, age 40 of Seward, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet pickup southbound when she lost control of the pickup, hit the guard rail, and then rolled onto its side in the ditch. Tritz was not injured and reported she was wearing her seatbelt. The vehicle received approximately $5,000 in damages.

MILE 103 SEWARD HWY—Jan. 19 at about 8:15 p.m., Troopers responded to a report of a single vehicle rollover near mile 103 of the Seward Highway. The operator was identified as Bryson Hicks, age 29 of Seward. An investigation revealed Hicks had lost control of his vehicle and went into the ditch. His vehicle rolled over and came to rest on its top. He was reported to be wearing his seatbelt. No injuries were reported. Alcohol was not a factor.

DUI

GIRDWOOD—Jan. 20 at around 10:45 p.m., Troopers responded to a report of a single vehicle rollover near mile 91 of the Seward Highway. The operator was identified as Rachel Whittington, age 28 of Girdwood. An investigation revealed Whittington had lost control of her vehicle and went into the ditch. Her vehicle rolled over and came to rest on its side. Whittington reported wearing her safety belt and received no injuries. Whittington was found to be operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and was arrested for DUI. Whittington was remanded to the Anchorage Jail where he was held until arraignment.

Motor Vehicle Collision

MILE 87.8 SEWARD HWY—Jan. 21 at about 12:22 p.m., Troopers from the Girdwood Post responded to a single vehicle collision at 87.8 mile of the Seward Highway. Troopers contacted Jacob Bowler, age 23 of Anchorage. An investigation revealed Bowler was driving southbound on the Seward Highway when he lost control of his vehicle and collided with the guard rail, disabling his vehicle. No injuries were reported. Bowler was issued a citation and released at the scene. Bowler’s vehicle was towed from the scene. Alcohol was not a factor.

DUI

GIRDWOOD—Jan. 22 at around 2:30 a.m., Troopers with the Girdwood Bureau of Highway Patrol stopped to assist a vehicle stuck in the ditch at the intersection of the Alyeska Highway and Seward Highway. The driver was identified as Christopher M. Vanni, age 22 of Wasilla. An investigation revealed Vanni was driving while impaired by alcohol and drove into the ditch. Vanni was arrested and transported to the Anchorage Jail. Bail was set at $250.

Man Wanted for Felonies Seriously Injured After Being Struck by Van

MILE 102 SEWARD HWY—Jan. 22 at 7:18 p.m., Troopers responded to mile 102 of the Seward Highway for the report of a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian that was struck by a van. Patrick K. Davids, age 42 of Anchorage, was hit as he was crossing the Seward Highway into the oncoming path of the van that was heading northbound. No other injuries were reported.

Mr. Davids was transported to Anchorage for life threatening injuries. The Seward Highway was closed from the time of the crash until approximately 11:30 p.m. while the scene was investigated. Anyone who saw Mr. Davids prior the crash or witness the crash is asked to call the Bureau of Highway Patrol at the Girdwood Post at (907)783-0972.

Providence hospital would not provide further information regarding Davids’ condition at the request of the family, a spokesperson at the hospital said. Court documents filed on Jan. 20 showed that Davids was wanted on four felony sexual abuse charges, and a warrant was filed for Davids’ arrest on charges of first-and-second-degree sexual abuse charges.

Motor Vehicle Collision-Damage Only Commercial Motor Vehicle

MILE 65 SEWARD HWY—Jan. 22 at around midnight, Troopers responded to a report of a single vehicle collision involving a tractor trailer near mile 65 of the Seward Highway. The operator was identified as Bruce Bertini, age 67 of Anchorage. An investigation revealed Bertini had lost control of his vehicle and collided with a guard rail. He was reported to be wearing his seatbelt. No injuries were reported.

Criminal Mischief, Interfering With A Domestic Violence Report, Assault

GIRDWOOD—Jan. 25 at about 1:49 p.m., a female reported to the Trooper Post in Girdwood an assault that occurred earlier in the day. An investigation revealed Bradley Sekulich, age 30 of Girdwood, prevented the female from calling for police after being assaulted by breaking the cell phone belonging to the female. Later Sekulich allegedly threatened the female with a firearm. The female reported the incident as soon as she was able to safely get away from Sekulich. Sekulich was contacted and arrested. Sekulich was remanded to the Anchorage Jail with no bail.

Theft III

GIRDWOOD—Jan. 25 at approximately 2:40 a.m., Troopers took the report of a stolen coat and identification from Sandi Schmitt, age 30 of Girdwood. Schmitt reported on Jan. 22 that she checked her coat into the coat check at the Sitzmark. When Schmitt returned to get her coat she was informed her coat was not there. The coat contained her identification. The coat was valued at approximately $300. An investigation is continuing.
