The Ring Girls chat as boxers get ready to battle at Thursday Night Fights.

The light scale has tipped and now we begin the rapid race toward spring and break up. I love Alaska, but I do need to get out of town for a second. I leave on the first of February and will report from southern climates till my return in March.

My feature highlight this week is Thursday Night Fights. A few days ago I was at Chilkoot Charlie’s with some friends enjoying payday. At the bar next to me in The Bird House, I met Jim Patton and Jerry Miller of Jim Patton Promotions who have been providing boxing entertainment to the Anchorage community for 23 years. They invited me to a ringside table to catch the matches that are held at the Egan Center almost every Thursday evening from the end of September through early April. They ask the question, “Does anyone want to see a fight?” Well I guess I did, cause I brought a friend and had a fun-filled evening of boxing entertainment and gorgeous (Well, most of them) ring girls. I want to report that I had a blast and will do it again. It was a big, diverse, eclectic crowd that was friendly and all laughed very hard at the spectacle. I highly recommend it. The Egan Center’s doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the fights start at 7:30 p.m. We’ll see you there.

First Friday at The Anchorage Museum. Enjoy the opening of Preston Singletary: Earth, Fire and Shadows and after: Portraits from Denali, artist talks by Preston Singletary and Tim Remick, plus planetarium shows and live music by Rebel Blues. 625 C Street (907) 929-9200

On The Verge Choreographer Showcase promises to be a great night of dance. The motto is, ‘We Are Movement’. On The Verge - Feb. 11. Alaska Dance Theatre, 550 E. 33rd Ave. Please contact ADT at: (907) 277-9591.

The Anchorage Symphony presents One Vison: The Music of Queen. The Anchorage Symphony is thrilled to perform this tribute to the music of Queen Feb. 10 & 11. Join the ASO and rock musicians of Jeans ‘n’ Classics, along with a 50-voice chorus, for this journey back to the ‘70s and ‘80s with Queen’s classic hits including Bohemian Rhapsody, We are the Champions, Somebody to Love and many more. I love Sushi & Sushi Japanese Restaurant and Sake Bar. It’s a fine dining experience for Japanese food with good service and excellent food. I like the midtown spot hidden nicely behind Kinley’s and Moose’s Tooth.

I enjoy the wide array of sushi rolls and their sake selection. Lately, I’m wild about SMT – that would be scallop, mayonnaise and tabiko (Fish roe) sushi bite. Mmm, delicious! My friend Dani Evans turned me on to SMT.

At first I was shocked that people would eat sushi with mayonnaise, but I melted and tried it because I try everything. It was delicious, absolutely delicious. The tabiko gave it a crunch and the scallops were fresh and the mayo made it creamy and rich. What can I say?

Now I try SMT at every sushi spot and Sushi & Sushi does it just right. I say try this hidden jewel. I know it may not be cheap, but it is fresh and delectable. Sushi & Sushi Fine Japanese Dining and Sake Bar, 3337 Fairbanks Street. For more information: (907) 276-5130.
