Ann Hanson of Cooper Landing heads out for her daily run – 1,000 consecutive days and counting.

1,000 Consecutive Days And Still Running

Ann Hanson, a retired physical education teacher from Chicago and summertime resident of Cooper Landing, has accomplished a great milestone, few people could claim – 1,000 consecutive days of running.

On Saturday, Aug. 27, Ann approached the day like any other. She got up in the morning and donned a tiara to celebrate her accomplishment and ran for 45 five minutes, which was the usual amount of running time she had done for the past 999 days. That 45 minutes usually amounts to about three miles, she said.

When asked whether she runs in sickness and in health, or whether she has just stayed healthy for 1,000 consecutive days, Ann recalled a time when she had minor surgery. She ran on the morning of the surgery, and explained to her doctor what she was doing in order to get the OK to run the next day.

Ann recalls that she only ran one mile the day after surgery, and she was careful to take it easy. All 1,000 days of Ann’s running have been done in the outdoors, none of it on a treadmill. Ann recalled one day running in Chicago after a blizzard.

“I ran in the tracks of the snowplows,” she said.

Ann finds running in Cooper Landing in the summertime much easier than running in Chicago – she enjoys the cooler weather and the scenery can’t be beat. When asked whether she plans to continue running or if she’s ready for a break, Ann responded, “Sunday was day 1,001.”

Her next milestone will be three years of consecutive days running, which she will reach on December 1.

“It’s kind of become my thing,” she said with a chuckle.

Pancake Feed Saturday, Sept. 3

All you can eat sourdough, buttermilk, and potato pancakes will be available with a serving of sausage, coffee, and orange juice, for $9 per person, with family rates available upon request. The bus ride can be used to get to appointments in town or go grocery shopping, with a $10 donation suggested. The bus leaves Senior Haven at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and will pick up riders. To reserve a seat, call 595-1810 or 595-3520 after 10 a.m.

Fishing Into the Fall

The Russian River and the fly fishing only waters around the Russian-Kenai confluence have been closed for sockeye salmon fishing, but coho salmon have arrived in the area, although the silver fishing is a little bit slow.

The limit for coho is one per day in the Russian River, the Russian-Kenai confluence, and the fly-fishing only waters in the surrounding area. Fishing in Cooper Landing in the fall stops being about salmon fishing and gears more towards trout fishing. Water levels on the Upper Kenai have been decreasing, creating good water clarity. That with the combination of the sockeye salmon spawning makes for great rainbow and Dolly Varden fishing.

So switch your gear and fish on.
