My Lower 48 travel continues in Louisiana – a place that is a state of mind. Taking your time here is a number one priority; so, consequently, I’m moving slowly. I’ll cover a wonderful Louisiana eatery at the end of this column, but first onto the local scene.

I missed Fur Ronde this year, but I heard that Darwin’s Theory lost again to Chilkoot Charlie’s in the annual Snow Shoe Softball Game. It’s not shocking that Darwin’s lost, but the rumor going round is Darwin said, “Anybody can play softball, but not everyone knows how to drink!” after one of Chilkoot Charlie’s snowshoe softball players ran to home base before he had finished his beer.

The Alaska Center for the Performing Arts has two great shows coming up. Anchorage Symphony’s American Masters March 26 and 27 and The Portland Cello Project March 19. The American Masters Experience will present the music of American composer Chris Brubeck and the dynamic trio Time for Three combine forces for a concerto encompassing various styles of music. It includes the American classic, Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, and the Symphonic Picture, rounds out the program. For tickets call: 263-ARTS.

The Portland Cello Project brings the cello to places you wouldn’t normally hear it. They’ve performed with heavy metal guitarist Buckethead as well as bars in Texas. They have performed in punk clubs in Boston, and halftime at The Rose Garden Arena for the Portland Trailblazer games. The Project also plays music on the cello you wouldn’t normally hear played on the instrument. From Beethoven to Kanye West to Pantera. The Project also builds bridges across all musical communities by bringing a diverse assortment of musical collaborators on stage with them. The Portland Cello Project has collaborated with musicians such as The Dandy Warhols and Dan Bern, among many others. Go see them! For tickets: 263-ARTS.

Saxophonist Rick Zelinsky performs a Tribute to the Jazz Masters concert every other month at the Tap Root. On March 24, Tap Root and Rick will feature the music of Miles Davis. Pat Owens, trumpet; Tom Bargelski, piano; Bob Andrews, bass; Brandon Cockburn, drums. Put it on your to do list for the beginning of spring in Alaska! Tap Root 3300 Spenard Road, 345-0282.

Yes, the Thursday Night Fights are happening at the Sullivan Arena, so get out there and start yelling! Speaking of the Sullivan Arena, my favorite kick ass female comedian Chelsea Handler is coming to the Sullivan in April. Get your tickets now for the shocking and always hysterical Chelsea! Sullivan Arena 1600 Gambell Street, (907) 279-0618

New Orleans is quiet now that Mardi Gras has ended. I enjoyed every aspect of the annual carnival season blast. You can’t do it all, but you can have fun trying. One delicious café bakery that I enjoyed was New Orleans, Cake Café & Bakery. This lovely corner spot is in the B-Water neighborhood that’s quaint and funky. The fresh pastries are superb and the neighborhood feel of the place is endearing. When you come to New Orleans visit this pastry heaven. The owner started out as a street baker who sold cupcakes. He’s now is booming with this hot spot. New Orleans Cake Café & Bakery 2440 Chartres Street, (504) 943-0010.
