As the winds whip up, clouds still cover the skies and geese begin flying south, it’s time for the Alaska State Fair. The State Fair! It’s that time of year where folks drive to Palmer for loads of fun. This year it runs from Aug. 26 through Sept. 6.
I looked at the calendar of events and it’s a good line up. I would recommend Kenny Rogers on Sept. 5, Ricky Skaggs on Sept. 1, or The Denali Cooks Aug. 28. The Bird Man of Las Vegas is an interesting exhibit and he will perform shows daily. The Karaoke contest is coming back for the second year, so all you crooners get ready.
The State Fair Train from Anchorage costs $54, but then you don’t have to worry about parking, drinking, or driving. For train departure or information call: 265-2494. The admission to the fair itself if you drive, is $5 for daily parking and $10 admission on weekdays and $12 on weekends.
Do you enjoy sovlaki, baklava, dolmades, feta and all things Greek? Then check out The Greek Festival Aug. 20-22. It is held annually at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church on O’Malley in South Anchorage. I drove by the church recently on my way berry picking on Flat Top, and saw the work being done on the new church being built on the same site. It has been a long dream realized.
Alcan General who won the bid for general contractor is building this $1.4 million beautifully designed place of worship. I imagine some of the proceeds from the festival will go toward the completion of this major project. To make a pledge or donation call: 333-2150. The web site uses the words from Mark 9:23, “All things are possible to him who believes.”
The Anchorage Symphony is kicking off the season with Champagne Pops. Watch The Stars is an evening of music from great divas such as Celine Dion, Dolly Parton, Dianna Ross and Bette Midler. It promises to be a fun filled night and historically the Pops delivers. Atwood Concert Hall, Saturday, Sept. 11 at 8 p.m. For more info: 274-8668.
Taco King is my restaurant pick this week. They have four fabulous locations to serve you. I usually go to the Northern Lights location because it is convenient for me, but all of them serve excellent, reasonably priced, authentic Mexican fare. I like the enchiladas, burritos and the variety of salsa selections, but their showstopper is the Special Taco Lengua. You may ask what is Lengua? It is boiled beef tongue. It may not be your cup of tea, but if you want to try something new that is tender and delicious I highly recommend it. All Taco King tacos are served on two corn tortillas that are topped with onions, cilantro, salsa and your choice of asada, lengua, adobada, chicken or chili verde. Taco Kings: 1330 Huffman Road, 113 W. Northern Lights Boulevard, 3561 E. Tudor Road and Burrito King-111 E. 38th Ave. They deliver and have one easy number for all locations: 771-6000.
