A special contingent of Junior Reserves Officer Training Corps from West High School in Anchorage journeyed to Whittier on April 27 to examine Alaska military heritage exhibits at the Prince William Sound Museum. The first ever Alaska JROTC field trip was led by Chief Master Sergeant Morris Pickel. After coming through the 9:30 a.m. tunnel opening, the group was greeted by Whittier's Mayor Lester Lunceford and interim City Manager Ed Barret. They were given a police escort to the museum where the cadets had the opportunity to take a look at Whittier's history and that of WWII and the Cold War. The 12 cadets were all given a tour of Whittier with stops at the Buckner Building and the harbor. Lunch was served at the Anchor Restaurant.
Chief Pickel proclaimed the visit a success stating that the experience gave the cadets new insight into Alaska's history. The field trip covered a distance of 120 miles.
