FVCS News

Congratulations to Sierra Halverson and Spencer Jonas for each earning an FVCS/Lion's Club Community Service Scholarship. These two young adults have contributed many volunteer hours to their community - by coaching younger athletes, assisting with events at Alyeska, the Girdwood School, annual Sports Swaps and more. Their scholarships will go directly to the colleges they plan to attend in the fall.

Come dance (“Shake and Bake”) with us! Four Valleys Community School (FVCS) is holding our second Live Music and Dance Fundraiser at the Sitzmark on Saturday, May 8. Music will be by Girdwood's own Andy Mullen, followed by the family band “Baked Alaskans.” Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 Adult, $5 under 18, max $40/family. After 10 p.m., tickets are $10. Purchase tickets at the FVCS Office, from FVCS Board Members, or at the door. Proceeds benefit FVCS.

Thank you for your support!

By now, Girdwood and Bird Creek post office box holders have received our Summer 2010 (purple) Program Guide. Check out the standard, popular summer offerings, as well as the new classes being offered.

Girdwood Primary Science Camp, Monday through Friday, July 12-6, is for children going into grades 1-3. Campers explore ecosystems from valley streams to alpine areas, wade through creeks to collect macro invertebrates, hike through wetlands, investigate predator-prey relationships, and identify Girdwood birds and more. These and many other adventures await the lucky science campers! Camp fee is $200. Intermediate Science Camp (for grades 4-6) has been canceled for this summer.

The very popular Four Valleys Summer Playground and Soccer programs will continue to offer local youth outstanding activities for summer time. Camp Fairplay is a new option for those in grades 4-6. Adults can work on their fitness levels with instructor Alison Vail or do Forrest Yoga with Shawn Kennedy. Go to www.fourvalleys.org to register for these programs and more, if you missed our Registration on April 27 and 28. Please call 742-5317 for more information.

Last, but not least, mark your calendars for the annual Volunteer Appreciation Barbecue, which will be held Sunday, June 6 from 5-7 p.m. at the Marlow Pavilion. Four Valleys Community School, Inc. will hold a short, general business meeting to bid adieu to some of our Board Members, and welcome new ones; please be there to show your support for their service. Please nominate someone you know who deserves to be recognized for his/her overall volunteer service to our community.

Two overall awards for Community Service will be presented; nomination forms are available at the post office or at the FVCS office. Additional awards are given by local non-profit organizations, to recognize those outstanding contributions made by volunteers within their organization.

All local volunteers and all local non-profit organizations are invited to support and participate in this event.

Let's celebrate our accomplishments together and look forward to many more.
