Chicken Fried Steak and Reindeer Chili Cheese rule at Harley's Old Thyme Cafe.

The burps and farts of winter's clasp have given way to sunny days of glorious spring in Alaska. The moose are eating bark off the trees and gardens are revealed from melting snow.

A Cappella is Italian for ‘in the way of the church'. A Cappella is also known as a form of singing done without musical accompaniment.

Barbershop Quartets are one of the most popular versions of this difficult craft. The Sweet Adelines International North Pacific Region 13 Annual Convention is coming to Anchorage April 23 and 24.

Quartets and Choruses from Alaska, Washington and Idaho will be participating in the annual convention. Featured on Friday: Quartet Contest. Saturday afternoon: Chorus Contest. Saturday night: Festival of Champions show. Times subject to change. Alaska Center for the Performing Arts. For more information: 240-4030.

My new favorite place for breakfast and lunch is Harley's Old Thyme Café on Old Seward Highway. I like home made pie and Harley, the owner, makes his from scratch. The waitresses say that a gym membership should be included in their pay, because the food is too good (especially the coconut cream pie).

The Chicken Fried Steak platter is yummy and generous. My companion was happy with the Reindeer Chili Cheese. I'm impressed with the variety of side dishes that Harley's offer.

I ordered a side of okra and a side of black-eye peas. Both were delicious. I even got my companion who detests okra to try it. It was a sight to see. I plan on trying every variety of Harley's homemade pie. I'll get back to you.

Harley's serves Breakfast and Lunch Tuesday – Sunday. Closed Monday. 349-8878, 7550 Old Seward Highway.
