‘Thank you' Girdwood Clinic

To the Editor:

I would like to publicly thank and commend Kerry Dorius and her staff at the Girdwood Clinic for doing an exceptional job. When I shattered my wrist in early February, I decided to see Kerry at the Clinic rather than holding my misshapen arm all the way to the emergency room. Kerry went far beyond just doing her job—she was not only professional but kind and compassionate. She got me an appointment with a surgeon so I wouldn't have to wait all night, gave me a shirt to wear and a pillow to support my arm in the car. I had no insurance card with me, but she did not ask for payment up front. Girdwood is lucky to have a clinic and staff like this.

Thank you, Kerry!

Girdwood's championship coach

To the Editor:

Bill Walsh coached three winning Superbowl teams in San Francisco, Chuck Noll's Steelers won two on two different occasions; Lombardi also won two titles, Mike Ditka only one. Standing a book width higher than these coaching giants is our own MVP, Carol Schimscheimer. Ms Schimscheimer has led our Girdwood elementary school kids to four consecutive division championships in the Battle of the Books school program.

Battle of the Books is an extracurricular program, which encourages children to read outside the classroom. The program lasts for several months as children read a set list of over a dozen books. The program ends in a battle, a contest where the kids represent their school with over 50 teams competing. Points are awarded to individual teams based on correct answers to reading comprehension questions. For the fourth year in a row, the Girdwood team was tops in the division and competed for the State title.

More important than the competition itself, is the inspiration our kids gain for reading. The extra effort that our teachers, coaches and parent helpers contribute to the program not only reinforces the importance of reading, but for some of our kids it will surely inspire a very precious gift—a life long passion for reading. Congratulations Ms Schimscheimer, congratulations kids, congratulations Girdwood School. Keep reading and keep working hard.
