Modern Dwellers Chocolate Lounge now has two locations: one in Midtown on Old Seward Highway and one downtown on G Street.
The Anchorage Bowl had a false spring a couple of weeks ago and then we got a wondrous over night dump of fluffy fresh snow, just in time for Fur Ronde. The city looks glorious as the light quickly grows, so getting out on the trails is just the ticket.
For all you dance lovers, I suggest you take in the Dance Spectrum of Alaska's 21st Annual Spring Concert. Dance Spectrum Alaska is a non-profit dance company that presents it's own annual concert. DSA provides young dancers with a training ground for contemporary work within their own community. Dance Spectrum Alaska's goal is to help dancers continue in their dance careers long after the life span of the average dancer. The performance is at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts Atwood Theatre, March 12 and 13. Tickets: 263-ARTS.
There is a new yoga studio in Anchorage called Anchorage Yoga. It's a lovely space and they claim to have the hottest yoga in town. I enjoyed my classes there and I suggest you check out this hot spot that has some of the best instructors in town. Anchorage Yoga, 701 West 36th Avenue, 301-0425.
The Concert Chorus is presenting The Mass in B Minor by Bach. The Concert Chorus is thrilled to perform this epic work that highlights Bach's craftsmanship and skill as an artist. The Atwood Concert Hall, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: 263-ARTS.
Saint Patrick Day is upon us so I suggest you take in some green beer, at your favorite Irish Pub and go to the St. Patrick's Day Celebration at The Discovery Theatre. The Northern Lights Celtic Dancers will be gracing the stage. Special guests include: Chris More, West Anchorage Chamber Singers and Midnight Sun Cloggers. A silent auction will be held in the lobby. Sunday, March 7 at 4 p.m. Tickets: 263-ARTS.
My restaurant pick is this week is Modern Dwellers Chocolate Lounge. There are two locations: one in Midtown on Old Seward Highway that opened about two and a half years ago and has done very well. Just three weeks ago, they opened a second location downtown on G Street. It's a lovely spot and conveniently located across from Darwin's Theory (My favorite watering hole this year). The owners, Zoe Oakley and Martha Brigham are artists who both love chocolate.
They also love interior design and came up with the Chocolate Lounge idea, which could combine their steel work, chocolates and their artwork. The design, décor and chocolates are all delicious to the eye. It feels and smells good in both shops and their signature item is Spicy Mayan Drinking Chocolate is out of this world delicious. They blend three different chili peppers in to the scrumptious chocolate drink. Customers can eat it with a spoon; add espresso, or steamed milk to the delicious concoction.
I tried an assortment of truffles and bought a Bacon Chocolate Bar. My favorite truffle was the Tokyo Tango, which is a ginger, and wasabi based truffle topped with a nori butterfly. You should really check it out. The interior design and artwork on the walls is worth the trip alone. 751 E. 36th Avenue, 677-9985 and 423 G Street 868-1818.
