Seward Ranger District Winter Trail Updates

Lost Lake Trail is now closed to snow machines due to the recent warm temperatures. There is overflow on lower elevation lakes with areas of deep water on Upper Trail Lake. Snug Harbor Road is mostly down to gravel for the first 4 miles. Trails packed by snow machines are hard and icy at low elevations but soften up higher. Skate skiing conditions are still great at Trail River Campground and Divide Ski Area. Slushy conditions at Exit Glacier Road.

On the Feb. 2 Kenai Borough Assembly meeting in Soldotna, after a long wait and a lost application, the Assembly confirmed Michael (Mike) Cooney to fill the Seat ‘F' on the KPB Moose Pass Advisory Planning Commission. Congratulations Mike!

Open Mic-Night at Trail Lake Lodge

The first Friday of the very month, the Trail Lake Lodge holds their ‘open mic-night' where local talent and travelers are able to showcase their musical talent! Festivities start around 8pm on Friday night, March 5.

New Moose Pass Transfer Site

If you have not noticed, the ‘old dump site' located in the actual town of Moose Pass is now removed. After many years of planning, the town of Moose Pass now has a new transfer site in Crown Point on the left-hand side of the road driving south towards Seward.

Moose Pass Welcomes Newest Addition to Our Family

On Monday, Feb. 22, Tanya (formally Tanya Parker of Moose Pass) and Bob Suhanek of Seward welcomed their first child, a girl, Marie Sailor Suhanek. It must have been the Moose Pass ladies great food at her baby shower the day before that urged Marie into this world; there will be many more wonderful years of the best food to come Marie! Congratulations Tanya and Bob!

Moose Pass Brownies and Girl Scouts Cooper Landing Cookie Sale

On March 13, the Moose Pass Brownies and Girl Scouts will be at Wildman's from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. selling their Girl Scout Cookies. This year's cookie sale profits will go toward the efforts of these young ladies to create a sign for the new Dave's Creek Stream Restoration Forest Service Recreation Area, a project that the Forest Service has undertaken at Tern Lake to enhance stream access and fish viewing in the area for a variety of users.

Be sure to stop by Wildman's and support the community enhancement effort of these young ladies, and of course get scrumptious Girl Scout Cookies. If you are unfortunate enough to miss the cookie sale in Cooper Landing, there will be another one in Moose Pass on March 20 at the Moose Pass Community Hall. More information will be provided in the next issue.

Trail River Skijor Fun Run

There were fifteen teams, comprised of dogs and people and about twice as many spectators at Trail River Campground on a beautiful day with a great trail.

This race was designed to simulate a mail run to commemorate the Iditarod during the Iditarod Historic Trail Centennial Celebration—all racers will have to pick up mail at designated parts of the course and deliver to the finish line.

Every participant finished with the mail, and although there were winning times, everyone was a winner! There were prizes for everyone donated by the Iditarod Trailblazers, Kathy Sarns, Knots So Fast feed store and SOS Pets, followed by a hot dog roast provided again by the Iditarod Trailblazers.

The racers and spectators have Jason Aigeldinger to thank for expert trail work along with awesome volunteers on race day, Michelle Keagle, Richard Hocking, Harold Faust and Emily Gustafson. Seward residents claimed the top six positions, however Moose Pass's own Will Brennan and Twig placed 6th, Jesse Labenski and Lucy placed 7th, Jason Aigeldinger and Noah placed 8th, Ruby Lindquist and Lark placed 9th, Jeff Clay and Trout placed 12th, Dave Pearson and Quiver placed 13th, and Jenn Haugh and Bell placed 15th. Great job Moose Pass!
