Kenai Hydro Updates

Kenai Hydro held a community meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 13 at the Moose Pass Community Hall. Concerned residents and environmental advocators attended the event. Kenai Hydro announced that they will most likely be postponing any continuation of studies and progress on their proposed hydroelectric projects for over a year.

Seward Ranger District Winter Trail Updates

January 9, the trail to Barber Cabin and other surrounding areas are hard-packed icy trails. It would be a good to have cleats on your footwear or wear snowshoes. These trails are not recommended for skiing. If you are prepared for conditions it will still be a nice trip. Ice-skating on both Upper and Lower Trail Lakes is great.

January 8, access to the Lost Lake area for snow-machines is now considered difficult at best with both Lost Lake and Primrose Trails iced up on the lower hills. The north end of Resurrection Pass Trail has hardened up as far as Caribou Creek but there are no major icy spots. Be sure to look for overflow on lower lakes at lower elevations after the recent rains and warmer temperatures.

Girl Scout Cookies Now Available

Girl Scout Cookie fans are able to pre-order cookies until Jan. 28. After this date the Girl Scouts will be booth sales in both Cooper Landing and Hope. Cookies are $4 a box, and you can choose from Samoas, Thin Mints, Tagalong, Do-si-dos, Thanks-a-loe, Lemon Chalet Creams, Daisy go Rounds, Sugar-Free Chocolate Chips, Lemonades and their new Thank you Berry Much. Every year the Brownie Troup donates the money from their cookie sales to a cause of their joint choice.

This year, the young ladies decided to raise money to design and produce an interpretive sign for the new and improved Dave's Creek Restoration Area. They will be working closely with the Forest Service to design a sign that they think best fits an area in their home town. So far, after a short visit to the site, the girls have decided that “No Litter” must be in bigger letters after they discovered an old fire pit where someone had left all of their trash. Contact Rose Hetrick at 288-3667 to get in touch with a Girl Scout.

New Year's Celebration

As always, there was a great turn out at the Ball Dimond for those wishing to freeze in the New Year. Moose Pass would like to thank Jen and Mike Trudeau for working all day driving their snow-machines back and forth across the lake to gather firewood for the night, others who contributed to the bonfire pile, the Moose Pass Sportsman's Club for putting on two great fireworks shows, one for the children and one for the late-nighters, and the community members who showed up to celebrate amongst great friends in good company.

I am always happy to have community photos submitted; this is a great tool to have your photos in the Turnagain Times! Also on the website are links to community websites such as the Turnagain Times and the Moose Pass Chamber of Commerce, as well as links to the previous issues of Moose Passings.
