Turnagain Arm Health Center provides aid for influenza

H1N1 influenza commonly known as the Swine Flu has had tremendous impact on many Girdwood and Turnagain Arm area residents. The worst of the flu struck during October and November when 7 patients with H1N1 influenza related pneumonia were seen at the Girdwood Clinic. Over 50 patients with uncomplicated influenza were also seen during this period. The Girdwood Clinic has recently received vaccine provided by the State of Alaska and two very successful mass immunizations were held at the Girdwood Clinic on Dec. 21 and 22.

The immunization of large numbers of people is expected to decrease the magnitude of any further waves of influenza illnesses in our area. Girdwood Clinic may still have H1N1 influenza vaccine available if you have not yet been immunized.

Turnagain Arm Health Center has generously provided a grant to assist disadvantage, low-income, un insured patients in our community that may contract the flu. Funds from this grant can be used to partially pay for appointments, tests, or X-rays that may be needed by persons seriously ill with influenza who may have difficulty paying for their care. Anti-flu medication provided by the State is also available for un insured patients.

This medication needs to be given within the first two days that a person is ill with influenza. Influenza typically has a rapid onset of high fever, sore throat, cough, and may be associated with nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, or diarrhea. An income based fee schedule has been instituted to determine who is eligible for financial assistance for influenza illnesses.

Turnagain Arm Health Center and Girdwood Clinic are concerned that some seriously injured persons with influenza may not receive needed care because of lack of funds.

If you, or someone you know, is seriously ill with what may be influenza please have them come to the clinic as soon as possible for treatment.

More information and updates on influenza can be found on the www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/ website. Don't forget good hygiene measures and stay home if you find yourself ill during influenza season.
