Community radio station a benefit to all

To the Editor:

Glacier City Radio is a non-profit community radio station. Community radio stations differ from other public radio stations by allowing community volunteers to actively participate as broadcasters. KEUL enhances the quality of life in our community by providing the opportunity for all voices to be heard.

The past few weeks I have been asking many people what they think the benefits of community radio are. The answer I heard the most was “in case of emergency.” Folks that were here in February of 2000, when the power was out and the highway was closed for five days, are very adamant about the importance of KEUL in our community.

KEUL strengthens the cultural health of our community, by promoting awareness of community-based organizations, non-profit organizations and services through Public Service Announcements. KEUL supports local artists, musicians, and cultural activities. KEUL empowers community members by providing a forum for a diversity of viewpoints and ideas. Lost and found animal reports have reconnected many a pet with their lost owner. With the eclectic variety of music that plays there is something for everyone.

Community radio benefits the whole community of Girdwood, even those who are not regular listeners.
