The Alaska Wildlife Center (AWCC) announced that it will be open for weekends only during the months of January and February, opening daily again beginning in March. Normal winter hours still apply—10:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.
AWCC is involved in several projects designed to enhance the visitor experience at the center, and promote the center's role in wildlife conservation. These projects include: construction of a rock wall dedicated to the Bears of Alaska Center, an intern bunkhouse and animal shelter, and the Wood Bison testing in anticipation of their release into the wild will all take place during January and February. In an effort to ensure the visitor experience remain at its best, AWCC management prefers that the center be closed on weekdays.
“I have mixed emotions about closing our doors on weekdays through these months” said Mike Miller, Executive Director of AWCC. “With the projects that AWCC is undertaking, the current economic climate, and January and February having historically been our slowest months, it only makes sense to make this change to our schedule and focus on the projects we need to accomplish to be ready for the 2010 season.”
AWCC has historically been open daily during these winter months, offering an activity to visitors of all types during a time where there is little else to do compared with the summer season.
AWCC also anticipates returning to its year-round, daily schedule upon completion of the Bears of Alaska Center in 2013.
