“Bigger is better” at Alyeska
By Sandy Chio
Special to the Turnagain Times
This winter, Alyeska Resort has adopted the motto “bigger is better”—from newly gladed terrain on the North Face to Alaska's first Superpipe.
Alyeska has also extended the night-skiing season, and with the help of Mother Nature, will be offering weekend skiing and riding through Memorial Day.
Trail crews worked on the North Face all summer, and the fruits of their labor have resulted in five new ski runs featuring gladed terrain accessed through the new North Star Gate.
Offering expert tree-skiing, this new terrain will open as soon as conditions permit.
This winter, Alyeska Resort is excited to announce the opening of a new in-ground Superpipe, the first of its kind in Alaska. The Superpipe will be located just below the Chair 7 mid-station, which allows for optimal viewing and access during all hours Alyeska is open for skiing and riding.
The Superpipe is 300 feet in length and 55 feet in width with 18-foot walls. The Alyeska Park Crew will maintain the Superpipe with a newly purchased 18-foot Zuagg pipe monster, ensuring precision grooming that meets the ski industry's Superpipe specifications.
Alyeska Resort is extending night-skiing operations for an additional two weeks in March, perfect for accommodating guests on spring break.
Night-skiing will be offered Thursdays to Saturdays from Dec. 17 through March 27 and available on the Tram and Chairs 1, and 3 operating from 4 to 9 p.m. A local's favorite, night-skiing under the “stars” is a must-do experience in Alaska.
Alyeska Resort offers one of the longest ski seasons in North America and more average hours of daylight starting in February than the continental U.S.
To celebrate the springtime sunshine, Alyeska Resort will be operating chairlifts 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week beginning April 1 through April 25 (regular season hours of operation are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.). This will provide great spring skiing in the late afternoon in April. In addition, Alyeska will be open for skiing and riding on weekends from April 30 to May 31, conditions permitting.
The Hotel Alyeska offers a variety of room packages that make staying and playing at Alyeska Resort an affordable option for everyone. A favorite during ski season is the “Ski & Stay Package” from $109 per person. Package includes one night lodging, lift ticket and breakfast. Another popular option is the “Winter Stress Relief Package” from $129 per person, which includes one night lodging, breakfast and $100 Spa credit. Call 754-2111 to find your perfect room package.
