The snow has arrived Turnagain Times readers. Winter warnings are in the air, but let's get out and play!

The Nutcracker is back. Or should I say, a New Nutcracker is finally here. After four years of Oregon Ballet Theatre's Balanchine Nutcracker, Eugene Ballet will try its hand at this Holiday favorite. Everyone should see Nutcracker, but then again I've seen Nutcracker way too many times to have a sane perspective.

Tchaikovsky is worthy of any pageant as far as I'm concerned. Act one is the story of Clara, or Mary, or Maria, (depending on which version) who has a dream the Nutcracker comes to life. He fights the Rat King, dances with Maria, and the world survives another Christmas Eve.

The second act concludes the show with a parade of expert solos, and the dancing magic of what this family classic is about. It's the archetypal performance of the season, and it supports many different aspects of the arts. It exposes the world of dance, storytelling, and the magic of theater to the community.

The Anchorage Symphony supplies some of the musicians. It gives many Anchorage school children their first experience with theater arts. It employs a variety of theater technicians, and it keeps the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts up and operating. I say buy your tickets today. For more information: 263-ARTS.

My restaurant pick of the month is Snow City Café in downtown Anchorage. This is one great place to eat. I like almost everything about it, except the crowds. It‘s best to go to Snow City on off hours like weekdays for late breakfast, or early lunch. The weekends are a zoo, so I suggest a call in advance. My favorite is the Polar Bear Breakfast. The Polar Bear Breakfast consists of French toast or pancakes, eggs, and either apple or reindeer sausage or bacon. It's a big portion, but when I'm in the mood to go out for breakfast, I like a big breakfast.

They are open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday (Espresso counter open until 4 p.m.)
7 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends. Snow City Café is located at 4th and L Street downtown Anchorage. 1034 W. 4th Avenue, 272-CITY (2489).
