Watching the magic happen at F Street Station.

I'm out of state traveling the West Coast. I compare Alaska to all the places I have visited, and none can compare. California is indeed a beautiful place, but you can hear from the people who live there what a struggle it is to keep their homes, and find work. Oregon has the same message. Although I'm nervous about another winter in Alaska, I look forward to becoming a better skier and enjoying what the deep, dark winter has to offer.
The Whipsaws are in Hoboken, New Jersey recording their new record. They will be back in Anchorage to perform at the Blue Fox on Nov. 18, Humpy's on Nov. 19, and Tap Root on Nov. 20. I gather from the snippets on Facebook, that they're having fun and receiving V.I.P. treatment. The beautiful and talented Marian Call is also back east on a tour spreading her lovely music across the country.
Melissa Mitchell, another beautiful AK songstress and otherwise total rock star, is participating in the Second Saturday's at the Spenard Roadhouse. This is a new venture by the Roadhouse, and one that is a good idea. On Saturday, Nov. 14 please join the Roadhouse for this event that will be benefiting the Red Cross Samoan Relief Efforts. They will have an Auction and live music by Norm and Ms. Blu. Special guest Ma'o Tosi and lots of other fun stuff! Help raise funds and awareness. 1049 Northern Lights. Phone: 770-7623 (ROAD).
For readers who want to shop for fresh vegetables from local vendors check out the Northway Mall's first Winter Wednesday Market. Delicious fresh food goods are available for sale each Wednesday from 10:00 a.m.– 5:00 p.m. through Wednesday, December 30th. Farmers from across the state will have root and winter vegetables for sale, including squashes and winter apples, as well as multi-season items such as spices. For information: 276-5520.
Cyrano's Off Center Playhouse is presenting Almost Alaska. This is a story about a mythical town, Almost, Alaska where people find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected ways. Yep, that's what we do here in AK. Runs November 5-22. 413 D Street. Phone: 274-2599.
My restaurant pick of the month is F Street Station. I like this restaurant/bar because the food is good, and the cooks, waitresses, and bartenders are savvy. I especially like the beer battered halibut and chips. I like to watch the magic happen, so I sit at the bar facing the cooks. Each time I go, I enjoy the intimacy of the experience. I don't go often enough to know the names of the employees, but I feel welcome when I dine there. 325 F Street. Phone: 272-5196.
