Moose Pass School Halloween Carnival A Success

The Moose Pass School Halloween Carnival was, as no surprise, a success. Cooper Landing, Hope and Moose Pass Schools joined forces to celebrate the Halloween holiday. There was a Cake Walk, a “Whipped Cream Toss Game”, hot dogs and chilly-dogs for carnival-goers, piñatas, and a “Jell-O Worm Eating Contest”. Prizes were awarded for Best Costumes, Best Decorated Cake, and Best Carved Pumpkin.

Kenai Crewsers Rowing Club Competes At World Master Games

The Kenai Crewsers Rowing Club (KCRC) competed at the World Master Games in Sydney Australia in October. Ten rowers, including their coxswain and coach Scott Allison met ‘down under' to represent Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. Over 2,400 rowers raced 850 races during the five-day competition. KCRC was able to rent boats in Australia to be able to participate. The weather throughout their competition was favorable for rowing the majority of the days, although there were two days that had to be cancelled due to high winds, compromising a few of the KCRC races. Lori Landstrom of KCRC had nothing but wonderful things to say of the Australian hosts, both the race organizers and the locals the team encountered; just take a look at the sign their hosts made for them upon their arrival! All of the rowers had a great time, even though they did not bring any medals home.

The Women's D (45-50) age group eight person boat placed third in their heat, missing the top two place advancers by a mere four seconds. Lori and the rest of the team were very excited to row on the Olympic course (specifically built for the Olympics) on Penrith Lakes. The course is rectangular in shape, is nine lanes wide, and features state of the art timing & photo finish equipment. KCRC was impressed! This year was the largest number of participants the Games have ever handled before. The KCRC will be training over the winter. If you are interested in rowing, or want to talk to the team members in more detail about their races, events, upcoming schedules, etc., you can find them at a booth at the Holiday Train, which is their largest fundraiser. The Holiday Train is on Dec. 4 and 5 at the Alaska Railroad cruise ship terminal in Seward.

Moose Pass Advisory Planning Commission Seeks Members

The Moose Pass Advisory Planning Commission (MPAPC) is a inviting member of the community to apply serves on the Commission. There are two vacant positions. If you are registered to vote in Moose Pass and are interested in serving as an advisor to the Kenai Peninsula Borough (KPB) on issues regarding our community you are encouraged to apply. Applications are to be submitted directly to the KPB Mayor. Jack Maryott with the KPB Solid Waste department presented the final dumpster site plans in the Sept. 1 meeting. The project is still on track and is thought to be completed by December of this year.

Initially there will be two dumpsters although the site can hold up to four if future expansion is needed. The site will be enclosed by a cyclone fence with green vinyl slats; will have a light at the site entrance, and motion-detected lights surrounding the dumpsters. The KPB has suggested that the site remain open all hours of the day, which would mean that the lights would be on as well.

The MPAPC suggested that the community try this method for nine months and then reassess how they feel about the potential light pollution. Community members are also discussing with the KPB the possibility of having motion-detected cameras that can be reviewed for compliance and to determine when the bins may need to be emptied. The MPACP is brainstorming preliminary suggestions and ideas regarding what will happen to the old dumpster site in Moose Pass town.

Seward Nordic Ski Club Membership Social

The Seward Nordic Ski Club invites new and existing members to come to their first social event of the season at Rez Art Coffeehouse in Seward on Nov. 7. There will be live music, homemade soups and breads, a chocolate fountain, and beer and wine for a cash donation. There will also be a silent auction and door prizes with outdoor gear, handicrafts, and other items. This is a great chance to meet and catch up with other skiers, and renew or start a membership. The Nordic Ski Club offers instruction to members in ski waxing; learning to X-C ski, skiing for children, classic technique, skate-skiing technique, telemark technique, and avalanche rescue. They also hold numerous events throughout the winter and summer seasons. The Club is often skiing and snowshoeing in Moose Pass, and could be a great mechanism for connecting the communities in the long winter season.

Warren Miller Movie “Dynasty”

If you missed the movie in Cooper Landing, there is another chance to see it on the Peninsula. On Friday, Nov. 13, the movie will be showing at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 14, there will be two showings, one at 5pm and another at 7:30 p.m. Both will be at the Seward High School Auditorium, and the tickets are $8 a piece.
