Discovery Café Employee Moves On After 8 Years
After eight years of dedicated service as a waitress at Tito's Discovery Café, Lana Scanlan will be moving on to a new adventure. Her business, Glacier Dyeworks, is booming and requires her full-time attention. Consequently, Lana and her husband, Dave, will devote their time to enjoying the new direction that their lives have taken.
In 1996, at the young age of 21, Lana, an avid skier and outdoors person, moved to Hope from Minnesota. She quickly settled into the work routine, waitressing first at Summit Lake Lodge, then securing a job at Tito's. In l999, Lana met Dave Scanlan, an extreme skier from Illinois, who had also settled in Hope. Five years later, the two married. They have since started their T-shirt business, Glacier Dyeworks. The personal, handmade touches of their tie-dye T-shirts dance with prisms of color and the designs evoke the tumultuous 1960s cry for change. Their textiles are timeless and unique.
In such an economically limited and small community, it takes a strong sense of independent drive, not only to invent your own business, but also to operate it successfully. Our community has witnessed the quiet birth of a company to its explosive success. We are all proud of you and Hope Happenings wishes the best for the Scan-Clan.
Secretary/Treasurer for Hope Inc. Resigns
Hope Inc. Secretary/Treasurer Rochelle Morris resigned from her position at the Oct. 22 meeting of Hope Inc. No one attending the meeting stepped forward to replace her and the position remains vacant. Ms. Morris held the position for two years and did a stellar job providing clear Treasurer's Reports to the community. She has offered any potential candidates clear direction on how to fulfill the position.
KPB 2010 Capital Project Priorities List
A roundtable discussion sponsored by the Kenai Peninsula Borough was held at the Social Hall on Oct. 31. The meeting, chaired by Borough Assembly Member Sue McClure and attended by Borough Mayor David Carey, was conducted to identify Hope's capital project priorities for the official 2010 Capital Project Priorities List. The Borough Assembly is actively gathering up to two capital project requests from each unincorporated community in the Borough. The list of requests will be reviewed during the upcoming legislative session.
The project identified as first priority is the improvement of Resurrection Creek Road. The road needs fresh gravel and it needs to be brought up to grade. Most Resurrection Road residents have a sore spot for all the dust that gets kicked up during the summer months. Life is too short for sore spots so hopefully this project, estimated to cost approximately $200,000, will come to fruition. The other project labeled as second priority is the renovation of the Social Hall. This historic gathering place is badly in need of a new foundation and porch. The project is estimated to require $25,000 in funds. It was also announced at the meeting that Hope will be receiving over $19,000 in unorganized community funds.
Battery Recycling Provided At The Transfer Station
Hope Inc. President Shawn Butler reports that beginning Nov. 5 there will be car battery recycling at the transfer station. Although it's illegal to dispose of corrosive old batteries at the transfer station, many people continue to do so. Gordon Wisdorf addressed this problem at the last Hope Inc. meeting Oct. 22. Ms. Butler researched possible solutions and discovered that the Anchorage company, Exide, would be willing to provide a container in which dead batteries could be collected and they would also come to the retrieve the batteries once the container is full. Exide will be recycling the old batteries.
School News and Events
The Hope School would like to give a big thanks to Leola Rutherford and Maggie Porter. Leola provided ceramic equipment and Maggie taught a pottery workshop for the school kids on Oct. 19. The students made turkey hot plates and candle votives. They had a great time and were very excited about how everything turned out. If you have a special talent that you would like to share with the young people at the school, please do. It is an excellent opportunity to participate and make a difference in the community.
Hope School would like to welcome Sabrina Johnson, the new full time Instructional Aide. Hope Happenings hopes to learn more about Ms. Johnson and share that news in the next issue.
The school is miraculously growing in number of students! There are now 17 kids with one more kindergarten student on the way.
At 6 p.m. Nov. 9, there will be a Pampered Chef fundraiser at the school. Twenty five percent of the gross product sales from the fundraiser will go to the school. This is a perfect opportunity to pick up fun kitchen supplies and possible holiday gifts. Appetizers will be provided and the products will be demonstrated. Hope Happenings truly advocates all three things that this fundraiser will provide: quality goods, food, and good times with friends. If you would like to pick up a catalog ahead of time please go by the front desk at the school.
Public Health Nurse Lois Daubney will be at the school Nov. 23.
Hunter Education Class Nov. 18 & 25
A self-study course on basic hunter safety will be held in Hope on Nov. 18 and 25.
