Each year the Native Heritage Center presents the World Music Festival. This is the Fifth Annual World Music Festival, and I encourage the community to support this event. The knock out line up includes local and international artists, such as Martha Redbone, Estrella Acosta, Medicine Dream, H-3, Last Night's Fun, and Kahurangi: Maori Dance theatre of New Zealand. Free admission is presented by Target. Doors open at 10:00 a.m.

Take in the Anchorage Symphony Opening Night on Oct. 24. Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony will close the evening, which I think is a vivacious and inspired choice for the kick off celebration.

The evening begins with Middle-Eastern drums, orchestral percussion, and rock drums. Combine these elements of the Anchorage Symphony, and guest artists PercaDu, and the result is fresh sounds for the new season. The performance will be at the Atwood Concert Hall at 8:00 p.m.

The Anchorage Museum is having an Alaska Day Celebration Oct. 18 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. October 18, 1867 was the date the United States purchased Alaska from Russia. Celebrate Alaska's rich history and culture with live music, theatrical performances and Russian-themed crafts. Anchorage Museum is located at 625 C Street. For information call 292-9200.

If you're looking for an excellent opportunity for your children to learn to draw while enjoying the zoo, sign them up for the Sketchin-Safari art classes. Children ages 9-12 will be guided by zoo graphics gurus Leon Rabinovitch and Steve Carson. They will teach children tips on drawing wildlife. Zoo animals will be the live models! Classes are held in the Gateway classroom from noon - 2 p.m. the second Saturday of the month. Cost is $20 for zoo pass holders, $25 without a pass. Includes admission and art supplies. Pre-registration is required at www.alaskazoo.org by clicking on our winter camp link. For information call: 346-2133.

The Fire Island Rustic Bakery is the darling of the Anchorage Bowl. They deserve to be. This sweet smelling bakery is a family owned artisan bakery located in one of the oldest neighborhood in Anchorage.

Owners, Jerry Luwanski and Janis Fleischman's goal was to offer a fine line of organic baked goods including crusty traditional breads, excellent sweet and savory pastries, delectable cookies, and other seasonal specialties.

I believe they have far surpassed their goal. They also offer fairly traded organic coffee from K-Bay Café and teas from Summit Spice.

This bakery has fine customer service and delicious food. Their ingredients are the freshest they can find. Whenever possible, they use local and organic goods, as well as recyclable, compostable, and biodegradable products. I especially enjoyed their Fire Island Wheat Bread.

The bakery is located at 1334 G Street. Tel. 569-0001. Open Wednesday-Sunday 7:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Closed Monday and Tuesday.
