FVCS News

Here we are in October again, and things are busy, busy, busy for Four Valleys Community School. A few board changes: Beth Davidson has stepped up to fill the open position of Vice Chair, and Robyn Kenny has returned to the board as Program Chair. New employee Tina Carlisle has joined Catherine McDermott and Coordinator Julie Jonas to keep things running smoothly in the office.

As a result, FVCS registration went well this fall, and there is still space available for most of the classes. If you want to register though, the time is now! After Oct. 16, a $5 late fee will be charged.

Last spring, Four Valleys and the Lions Club awarded Community Service scholarships to four outstanding Girdwood seniors: Trevor Scott (Nation Merit student, South High Salutorian, heading to Dartmouth), Oscar Johansson-Theiss (Volunteer extraordinaire-going to Humboldt State, CA), Shana Reichlin (extensive local community service-UAA) and Eve Van Dommelen (future restaurateur-UAA). Congratulations to these deserving students.

And the winners for the Athlete Scholar Award have just been chosen, two months earlier than last year. In conjunction with Di Hiibner and Alyeska Ski Resort, FVCS was able to make it possible to offer three downhill season passes as scholarships to students who are “enthusiastic skiers and are in high academic standing.” Also, awards were offered to students participating in Nordic skiing, using the same criteria.

In addition to demonstrating a 3.25 GPA for the last two quarters, each applicant had to submit an essay, get at least one letter of recommendation and attend an interview with 3 FVCS Scholarship Committee members.

We received excellent applications and it was extremely difficult to select just six, but the winners for Grades 5-6 are Frances Carlisle (Alpine) and Meghan Thompson (Nordic). For Grades 7-8, the finalists are Sage Dudick (Alpine) and Paige Mohl (Nordic). Amy Davis (Alpine) and Natalie Sword (Nordic) were the choices for high school grades 9-12.

Finally, along with a slight chill and the promise of snow in the air, excitement is running high for the 14th Annual Sports Swap, scheduled for Oct. 24 from Noon to 5 p.m. at the Daylodge. All season sports equipment and accessories will be accepted between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Purchased equipment can be picked up between 5-6 p.m. After that, all unclaimed goods become the property of FVCS Inc. Hope to see you there!

Check in at the FVCS office (742-5317) for other upcoming events, or if you want to use the community calendar, go to http://calendar.girdwoodrotary.org/calendar.aspx.
