The fall colors were exceptional, the fishing is still good in the Kenai, bears are reported moving in the Snug Harbor Road area and many meetings and events are planned for the next three weeks.
Friday Night Book Club Meets And Chats
The Friday Night Book Club is meeting Oct. 16, 6 p.m., at The Alaskans at Cooper Landing which some of us remember as the place Max and Belva Hamilton had their home. They are discussing My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. Bring an appetizer to share and your favorite drink.
Al Hershberger Shares 62 Years In Alaska
Saturday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. at the community hall, Al Hershberger is the guest speaker for the Cooper Landing Historical Society's fall meeting. Al moved to Alaska 62 years ago and has an incredible collection of photographs from around the state. His program is “A Little Bit of Everything,” and he'll show slides and talk about working for the F.E. Company near Fairbanks in 1948 to flying over and photographing Cooper Landing the day after the 1964 earthquake and much more. Al is a distant cousin of Will Troyer's; both were Indiana farm boys. The business meeting will be short.
Soups And Pies To Benefit Seniors
After the historical program, the hall will be set up for the Cooper Landing Senior Citizen Corp. Inc.'s Soup Supper. Choose you mug to keep and fill it with different soups as often as you want. Breads and desserts will also be served and pies will be auctioned. This is all to benefit the senior corporation. Soup will be served from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. for $10 per person. Family rates are available.
Winter Fest Activities Focuses On Snow Fun And Safety
Winter Fest 2009 on Sat. Oct. 23 begins with a winter gear swap at the school from noon to 3 p.m. Now's the time to clean out outgrown gear. Raffle tickets for $5 will be sold for a Stormtech backcountry jacket drawing. Contact Virginia Morgan at 595-3094 to book a table.
Chugach National Forest Snow Ranger Alex McLain will present an Avalanche Safety Seminar at the school at 1:30 p.m.
The Community School Winter Fest moves to the community hall for guest speaker Dick Griffith at 5:30 p.m. He will present a program on the Northwest Passage Expedition.
Silent auction winners of donated winter gear items will be announced at 6:30 p.m. and half an hour later, Warren Miller's film, Dynasty, will be shown in the hall. The cost is $10 for this film, which presents the past, present, and future of winter sports. Tickets need to be purchased by Oct. 16 to guarantee seating.
Quilting And Sewing Classes Are Offered
Jeanne Acton, Bearly Threaded Quilting, has scheduled several quilting and sewing sessions through Cooper Landing Community School this month, and in November and December Call Virginia Morgan for more information.
Stamp Camp Is Three Days Of Non-Stop Activity
More fun is planned at the community hall Oct. 30, 31, and Nov. 1, when Stamp Camp is again in session. Meals are shared, three times a day, and table space is limited. Cost is $15 per day or $40 for the three days. Demonstrations, raffles, and surprises as well as journaling and card making will go on from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. the first two days and 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday. Come over and see what's happening.
CLAPC To Consider Borough Lands And Wildlife
Cooper Landing Advisory Planning Commission meets Wed. Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. in the community hall. Fish and wildlife representatives from the US Forest Service and the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge will be at the meeting to discuss wildlife concerns.
CLCC Meeting To Update Community On Local Affairs
The Cooper Landing Community Club meets at the community hall at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 5. Gary Galbraith is president, Sandra Key vice president, and Phil Weber is secretary-treasurer. Look for posters and Community Crier emails regarding the agenda and guest speaker.
