Volunteers put in new sod at the Girdwood ball field.

FVSC helps to replace sod on ball field

To the Editor:

Girdwood Parks and Rec would like to extend a big thank you to the Four Valleys Soccer Club for their outstanding workday on Saturday, Sept. 19. The sun was out, and the club showed up in force to repair the largest low spot in the field, which made that part of the field unplayable when it is wet, which, of course it is sometimes in Girdwood. The old sod was cut off, new soil and sand mixture was brought in to fill the hole, compacted, and 400 square feet of new sod was placed on the new grade. Soccer players from six to 60 plus pitched in and six hours later it was done! Thanks again to these hard working troops! We hope to use this strategy to continue bring the field up to grade and making it the best playing surface possible.

Volunteers make Humpy Fest a success

To the Editor:

The Girdwood-Turnagain Arm Lions Club would like to thank all of the people, workers and attendees who made this year's Humpy Fest one of the best ones yet. Many salmon were caught for the fish derby and the rain held off for our Ducky Race and Flying Fish Split-the-Pot. While pulling rubber ducks from California Creek, one of the Humpy Fest originators, Gary Wilson, noted that there were a lot of smiling faces around.

We also would like to thank all of the sponsors for the event that made it possible to award many prizes during the course of the day: The Double Musky, Canyon Creek Wildlife Photography, The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, Prince William Sound Cruises, Red Robin restaurant, the Bake Shop, The Alpine Diner, The Ice Cream Shop, Hilltop Ski Area, Arctic Roadrunner, Coast Pizza, the Girdwood Clinic, Lion John Trautner, Alyeska Resort, the Alaska Candle Factory, and the Great Alaska Tourist Trap.

Thank you and we'll see you down at Lions Park,

Prince William Sound Advisory Council thanks Whittier businesses and people for hospitality

To the Editor:

The Prince William Sound Regional Citizens' Advisory Council would like to thank the people and businesses of Whittier for their hospitality during our board meeting on Sept. 17 and 18. Each year, we hold one of our three board meetings in a community affected by the Exxon Valdez oil spill. This year, it was Whittier's turn and we found wonderful service and facilities.

We'd like to send a big thanks to the staff of The Inn at Whittier. The council booked almost the entire hotel for two days. The staff was extremely helpful and always smiling, and the food prepared by the restaurant was delicious. Thanks also to June's Whittier B&B, the Sound View Getaway and the Anchor Inn for their friendly accommodations.

Special thanks to City Manager Mark Earnest for a nice welcome speech and for providing exceptional weather the final day of our stay.

On Thursday evening, we held a community reception at the Whittier Museum. Many thanks go to Sue Cogswell from the Prince William Sound Economic Development District, Ted Spencer from the Whittier Museum, and Peter and Jonette Kessack of the Tunnel's End Restaurant for a great reception.

Particular thanks go to Marilyn and Pete Heddell, the council's Whittier board and committee representatives. Marilyn and Pete went above and beyond to help us coordinate the meeting and made sure everything went smoothly.

Again, we sincerely appreciate all the efforts made by the people of Whittier to make our event a success.
