Swan Injured with Arrow Rescued at Tern Lake
The trumpeter swan that was shot in the wing with an arrow was rescued during a joint effort by the Alaska Sea Life Center personnel and a kayak company out of Seward, Kayak Adventures, which provided the kayaks to initially capture the swan. Scientists were able to remove the arrow with little damage to the bird, and released it back to Tern Lake within hours. The swan happily returned back to its mate, and has been at Tern Lake ever since. Many agencies, both government and non-profits, have offered a reward for any information regarding the illegal shooting.

Eastern Kenai Peninsula Slash Pile Burning
The Chugach National Forest-Seward Ranger District will begin burning slash piles on the Eastern Kenai Peninsula starting Sept. 15. Burning may continue through May 31, 2010, as weather conditions permit. The burning is part of a Peninsula-wide effort to reduce hazard fuel loads as a result of the spruce bark beetle epidemic that hit the region in the past decade. There may be some residual smoke in the mornings or late evenings during inversion events around the Kenai Lake and Seward Highway. Burning in Moose Pass is taking place on the north end of Trail Lake. If you have any questions, please contact the Seward Ranger District.
