Volunteers help to re-rope the hand tram

To the Editor:

Girdwood Parks and Recreation would like to thank the following folks for their efforts to re-rope the hand tram last Monday: a big thank-you to Keith and Deb Essex of Alpine Air for flying the new rope out and backhauling the old rope. The installers were long-time tram hands Steve Delatush, Norman Starkey, and Brian Burnett.

The hand tram is seeing very heavy usage, and most nice days have a line at both ends waiting to cross. We’d like to encourage everyone using it to take it slowly to enjoy the ride, but more importantly, to avoid wearing out the rope prematurely or causing a de-ropement.

Thanks to the many supporters of this year’s Fungus Fair

To the Editor:

The 2nd Annual Fungus Fair was another great success. Visiting mycologists from near and abroad gave talks, workshops and led forays to groups of interested participants. Thanks to Dominique Collet, Ken Gill, Diane Plenninger, Kate Mohatt, Chris Maack, and Dr Steve Trudell for educating us in the vast field of mycology. This event would not have been possible without the support of USFS Glacier Ranger District, Girdwood Parks and Rec and Girdwood, Inc.

The kick off Funky Fungus Formal was sold out again. The food was fantastic and we would like to thank Mike Flynn and Joy Hatcher at the Hotel Alyeska for making it such a success. The entire Alyeska staff helped make this event a dream to plan and carry out and was made possible once again thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Byrne family.

Auction donations came large and small and we had something for almost everyone to bid on! We could not have raised as much money for our trails without the generous support of the Girdwood Trails Committee and donations by John Trautner, Anna Young, Ak Paragliders, Joe Wolner, Norm Starkey, Camilla Seifert, Kate Sandberg, Teresa Paquette, Rebecca Reichlin, CeCe Mendosa, Dennis Mohatt, Bernadette Mohatt, Diana Livingston, Barbara Lavallee, Cleary Donovan, Sherry Dugan, Katie Cronk, Betty Charnon, Kate Chandler, The Golden Needles Quilting group, Brian Burnett, World Cup, Third Eye Photography, The Bake Shop, Rory Hammel, The Ascending Path, Skinny Raven, Mudhead Pottery, Jeannie Palmer, Java Haus, Jack Sprat, Hottentot Pottery, Jonnie Lazarus, Holland America Princess Alaska, Hidden Creek B & B, Girdwood Books and News, Glacier Valley Roaster, Full Circle Farm, Double Musky, Crow Creek Mercantile, Copper Kiln Pottery, the Alaska Candle Factory, Alaska Wildland Adventures and Alaska Wildlife Conservation.

The Fun Guy Fun Gal Fun Run was made possible with the help of Four Valleys Community School. Kris Malecha, Joan Frankevitch, Paul Crews, Gerard Eldridge, Betty Charnon, Matt Malecha, Catherine McDermott, Lanis Drake, Steve E., Alison Rein, Jean Larson-Rein, Danika Donnelly, Konrad Mittelstadt, Tim Charnon, and the Jr. High Cross Country Team . Thanks to Skinny Raven for providing great prizes at the run.

Community volunteers who helped with the various other aspects of the event, from selling t-shirts to working at workshops and with the kids arts event include Katie Cronk, Tamah Haynes, Laz, Ruth Kircher, Sara & Riley Cronk, the Service High Shop class, Ashley Hovis, Kyle Kidder, Shawn Kennedy, Teresa Paquet, Rory Hammel, Dan Keeler, Sue & Steve, Norm Starkey, Kate Sandberg, Brian Burnett, Carolyn Brodin, Matt Wedeking, Deb Essex, Diana Livingston, Brooke Edwards, Girdwood Fine Arts Camp, Teresa Paquet, Shawn Kennedy, Ed Harper, Kathy VonMassenhove.

Once again, we are thrilled by the support the community has given this event and we look forward to having it again next year.
