Sexy Senior Dumpster Cleaners and friends drifted down the Kenai River Sept. 10. Some of the group walked out on the Kenai River Trail while the remainder crossed Skilak Lake to the boat landing.

Sexy Senior Takes a Fun Break

Taking a break from their weekly transfer site cleanup duties, the Sexy Senior Dumpster Cleaners and friends, 24 in all, enjoyed rafting the Kenai River Sept. 10 with the Alaska Rivers Co. crew. They saw several bear, grizzly and black, in the river and on the banks. After they were all transported back to the ARC camp, they were treated by Mary Louise Molenda and Gary Galbraith to champagne and a table full of food. A rain shower did little to dampen the good times as they retreated under cover.

Library Changes Hours and Plans Sweepstakes Party

Fall is upon us and the Cooper Landing Community Library will be reducing some hours, is the word from the library director, Katie Green. Beginning immediately, the library will not be open Monday morning and Tuesday evening until next spring. Saturday hours will be increased and so library will be open from 1-4 p.m. every week. Are you ready for Library’s big event on Nov. 8? This is the annual fund raising sweepstakes including a fancy food party at the community hall. If not, please visit the library or talk to any librarian to get in on the fun. Only 150 tickets will be sold so the odds are good.

Cooper Landing Gun Club Holds a Raffle and Two-Gun Class

From Steve Skolnick comes information about the Cooper Landing Gun Club. They are holding a raffle at $10 per ticket with 150 total tickets. The winner gets a trip for two with Hallo Bay Bear Viewing any time up until Sept. of 2010. Mail your money to CLGC Bear Raffle, P.O. Box 547, Cooper Landing, AK 99572. They have a very few openings left in their fall 2 gun defensive class. You need a rifle or shotgun in good working order, a handgun (same), 100 rounds of ammo for the rifle, slugs for the shotgun, and 200-250 rounds for the handgun. This will be a great course taught by two outstanding instructors. It will be held Sept. 26 and 27 on the range. We’ll be working on handgun from the holster, long gun accuracy and snap shots, transitions from one system to another, field tactics, and many other things of interest to those who carry in the field. Mail your information to CLGC Two-Gun Class, P.O. Box 9998, Cooper Landing, AK 99572. Call Pat at 595-1512.

If you receive a new membership application in the mail please send it back with your payment. We’re trying to save up a pile of money to finish up the pistol bay with suitable storage and a cover. We bid the job out and all the bids came in higher than our bank account. Laura and Kevin are working on grant applications this fall, too. Meanwhile, the pistol bay is open and functional. Please do not drive on the range—the surface will end up deeply rutted and messy.

Advisory Planning Commission Supports Walkable Community Project and More

At the Cooper Landing Advisory Planning Commission meeting Sept. 9, an open discussion on future uses of the gravel pit on Snug Harbor Raod included suggestions for snowmobile camping; camping area, golf course and gardens. Deb Carlson and Janette Cadieux presented the first draft of the walkable community proposal. It was agreed that the Walkable Committee should get on the Community Club’s agenda for the Sept. 24 meeting. The Commissioners voted unanimously to support the concepts embodied in the walkable planning process and to recognize the accomplishments of the group so far.

A letter of support of the Trails Grant requested by Sandra Holsten was voted for affirmatively. CLAPC unanimously recommended passage of Plat Review KPB File 2009-127 (Integrity/Meredith, Bauer).

The next CLAPC meeting is scheduled for Oct. 7, 2009, at 6 p.m. in the community hall.
