The Anchorage Bowl is alive with action this time of year. There’s crispness in the air, which tells us autumn has arrived, and the Aspen leaves will soon be bright yellow. Venture out and enjoy the following offerings.
The Anchorage Museum is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month Family Day by having free admission, Latin music, dancers and a fashion show on Sunday, Sept. 13 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Another excellent opportunity for the family to enjoy is the museum and the joint opening reception for the exhibitions “Science in Toyland” and “Artists at Play.” Come and experience music by Fiddle De Dee, balloon art, face painting and art activities from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19. Opening reception is included with museum admission. 625 “C” Street, 929-9301.
Phyllis’s Café & Salmon Bake is hosting Alaska’s own Hurricane Dave at 6:00 p.m. on Thursdays through Sept. 24. This country/folk artist performs a great show with his harmonica and guitar playing. Phyllis’s is located in downtown Anchorage at 436 “D” Street. For more information: 274-6576.
The Hold Steady Band is returning to the U.S. from their United Kingdom Tour. The first U.S. stop for them is the Bear Tooth Theatre & Pub Thursday, Sept. 17. The Hold Steady Band is a great band that’s been working hard for years below the radar, until their recent hit, Sequestered In Memphis off the Stay Positive album. The Whipsaw’s, who are sounding great after their hiatus, will be the opening band. 1230 W 27th Avenue, 276-4200.
Come help the Anchorage Waterways Council at The First Annual Great Alaskan Duck Race. This festival is making a difference through support of our waterways in Anchorage. It’s being held at the Peanut Farm, which is conveniently located on Campbell Creek. This family event will educate our families on how to do our part keeping our waterways clean. The day will include a Campbell Creek Cleanup, workshops, creek rehab projects, and music. Come enjoy the view and adopt a baby duck, or become a race sponsor. The race is Sept. 12. The Party is from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with the Race starting around 2:00 p.m. The Peanut Farm: 5227 Old Seward Highway. For more information: 563-3283.
Uncle Joe’s Pizza is my restaurant pick of the week. I normally patronize the downtown location, but you can also visit the three other locations for carry out or delivery. They offer stone baked pizza, calzones, gyros, wings, salads, soup and subs. I often head to Uncle Joe’s, because the pizza in consistently good. When I’m on the go and need to dine quickly, a slice and a beer can’t be beat. I like the Hawaiian (Canadian Bacon and Pineapple), but the Cheese Pizza is also just right. A slice of pizza goes for $3.50. 1128 “G” Street, 279-3799, 3401 E. Tudor Road, 357-4652, 6839 Jewel Lake Road, 248-9404 and 11700 Old Seward Highway, 349-3799.
