Volunteers and sponsors recognized and thanked

Mayme Ohnemus hosted the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon at Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge on August 20 to celebrate Sexy Senior Dumpster Cleaners (SSDC) and their 12 years of community service and the Cooper Landing Senior Citizen Corp. Inc. (CLSCCI) board members and committee volunteers. More than 50 people gathered for the occasion.

Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Dave Carey and KPB Assembly Member Ron Long spoke and Mayor Carey served chocolate brownies to the group. A special thank you was given to the SSDC and CLSCCI sponsors: Conoco Phillips, Kenai Peninsula Borough Solid Waste Department, ALPAR, Chevron, Alaska Housing Finance Corporation, Denali Commission, and the Rasmuson Foundation.

SSDC Agent Ohnemus has entered a new life phase and showed large photographs of her two grandsons, Trenton and Grayson Ohnemus. She was later surprised by the gift of a teddy bear wearing a “grandma’ tee shirt and singing “When I’m 64.”

SSDC have logged some impressive statistics. In twelve years of service they logged 44,604 volunteer hours, picked up and bagged 297,895 pounds of trash, traveled over 141,000 miles and earned more than $164,000 for the Cooper Landing Community Club during the first four years and since for CLSCCI.

Camp Fire USA Alaska Council CEO Barbara Dubovich also spoke during the recognition luncheon and invited all interested to tour Camp K on Snug Harbor Road after the luncheon.

Camp Fire’s Camp K tour shows major changes

Camp K, formerly Camp Kustaka, is being redeveloped with new facilities to all for increased camper capacity. Several of the guests from the luncheon toured Camp K with CEO Dubovich, Director of Development Joanne Phillips, Project Manager Steve Fishback, representatives from the offices of Senator Mark Begich, Governor Sean Parnell, and from the Rasmuson Foundation. Camp Fire continues to actively seek utility infrastructure funding for work required by KRSMA and DNR.
