The Alaska State Fair is coming! So is ‘Lion King’! I say, get going, and take the family to both events!

The Alaska State Fair in Palmer is a jewel among state fairs. I strongly suggest you make your way to the valley for some of the highlights. The Beach Boys are performing two shows on Sunday, Aug. 30 (4:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.) at the Borealis Theater. Tickets are available online. You can also catch Idol Star, Bucky Covington, Monday, Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m. at the Borealis Theater.

I worked on ‘Lion King’ in Portland, Oregon in 2005. I dressed the Cheetah (Yes, it’s hard as it sounds.). Here in Anchorage, I’ll be a carpenter. It’s a great show and the message is, “It’s the Circle of Life and it moves us all!” For tickets go to CenterTix.

The Anchorage Museum will offer a free lecture on Kodiak and Chugach Mythology at 7:00 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14. Lecturer Yuri Berezkin, director of North American collections at the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography in St. Petersburg, Russia, will be the featured speaker. Berezkin will lecture on elements of Kodiak and Chugach folklore and mythology that have parallels in the American Arctic, and along the Pacific front of Asia. Berezkin analyzes folk and mythological motifs to illuminate the debate about the origins of the Alutiiq people. He asserts that the people who initially settled Kodiak, and the nearby mainland had mostly Pacific, not continental Siberian roots.

Volunteer Open House! Attention to all folks interested in volunteering at the museum. The museum has added new volunteer positions because they have expanded and added science to its mission. On Monday, Sept. 14 from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., learn about volunteering opportunities and benefits, including free admission, special discounts, ongoing education, and an opportunity to make a difference. For more information, call 929-9254. The Anchorage Museum’s winter hours will be in effect Sept. 15 through May 9. Those hours are: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; noon to 6 p.m. Sunday; closed Monday.

Ray’s Place Vietnamese Restaurant is my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Anchorage. I think Ray’s is special because the Pho (Pronounced Fuh) is yummy. Pho is a century old dish from Vietnam. The first Pho restaurant started in Hanoi in the 1920’s. It’s a noodle (usually rice noodles) dish served with thinly sliced meat in broth. It’s commonly served with a side of lime, bean sprouts, hot peppers, and basil that the customer adds to the dish. Pho varies from place to place, and can have diverse ingredients including; chicken, seafood, heart, liver, beef tripe, cilantro, and cinnamon. Ray’s is family owned and is a cheery spot, even on the dark days of winter. 2412 Spenard Road.

Ray’s is open Monday-Friday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Ray’s is closed Saturday and Sunday. For more info: 279-2932.
