All students new to the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District are required to have a physical examination before the first day of school. This form can be found on the KPBSD website. A copy of the completed physical examination form should be given to the school at registration. Immunizations must be up-to-date before any student can enter school in the fall. Please visit the District website at www.kpbsd.k12.ak.us for all immunization requirements and other links for registration.

Hope/Sunrise Historical Society to meet August 22

The HSHS will start the meeting with a potluck at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22 at the Hope Social Hall. Following lunch, Dr. Rolfe Buzzell will present a power-point program on miner Sam Wible with a lot of new and exciting information about Sam. All are invited to attend the potluck and the presentation that follows. The following was provided by the HSHS mailer.

“Sam Wible was a civil engineer and an 1849 California gold rusher. In California he became a wealthy banker. He arrived on the Kenai Peninsula in 1898, but California remained his winter home. That first summer, Wible installed an elevator on Sixmile Creek. In summer of 1899 he bought a share in the Crow Creek mining corporation and brought the first hydraulic pipe into the area. Forty three men worked for Crow Creek Mine that year, building a road and installing the Hydraulic plant.

Then, Wible purchased his first Canyon Creek claim and shifted his attention there. Putting his engineering skills to work on Canyon Creek, he tunneled under the mountain and dug a series of ditches. Wible installed to hydraulic plants on his Canyon-Sixmile Creek claims by 1901. In 1906 his mine was the largest producer in the district, making close to $20,000. The ‘Old Cuss’ died in 1911.”

A Fungus Foray in Hope with Dominique Collet

Dominique Collet of the South Central Alaska Mycological Society will be in Hope on Saturday, Aug. 22 from 1 to 5 p.m. for a fungus foray. All are to meet at the Hope Community Library to discuss the plan for the day, then will break into smaller groups to collect fungi in a variety of habitats.

At a time agreed to at the beginning of the day, everyone will gather back at the library to identify, label and display all the fungi. If you have mushrooms in your backyard, bring them. Bring your mushroom identification books. To carry the mushrooms without breaking them, please bring either a basket, a cardboard flat or a clean five-gallon bucket. Please dress for the weather. Rubber boots are recommended. To RSVP, contact Scott Sherritt at 782-3436. Hope to see you there.

Hope Inc. needs membership votes

Earlier this spring, ballots were mailed to all the Hope Inc. members. The ballot was to change the required Saturday night meeting to a night set by the President of Hope, Inc. as it is often hard to get a quorum on Saturday night.

Not even enough ballots have been returned for the two-thirds required number. Those that have been returned remain unopened. It has come to the attention of President Shawn Butler that either members did not understand that a vote was being taken and/or did not get the ballot at all. If you are one of those folks, please contact Rochelle Morris at Alaska Dacha to obtain a ballot. It is not too late to vote on this important issue.

President Butler is requesting that all of Hope’s non-profits submit a budget for their next year’s fuel and utilities expenses. Revenue sharing monies received from the State of Alaska through the Kenai Peninsula Borough will again be available to help cover these costs. The amounts will be needed for the October Hope Inc. meeting.

President Butler also reported that the new “Visitor Information” cabin, provided by Alaska Dacha, has been well used by the visiting public. The bear trash cans around the community as well as the fish cleaning tables on Resurrection Creek have worked out well this summer and the new public restrooms located across from the Hope Social Hall have been a welcomed addition to the Main Street area.

Notice of Public Hearing to rename Palmer Creek Road

A notice has been posted by KPB, and e-mailed to Hope residents, regarding a proposed name change of the Palmer Creek Road. This change would make the whole road Resurrection Creek Road. Currently Palmer Creek Road begins where it connects with the Hope Highway and goes to the new curve where it is joined to the Resurrection Creek Road.

This item will be considered by the Kenai Peninsula Borough Planning Commission on Sept. 14, commencing at 7:30 p.m., or as soon thereafter as business permits. The meeting will be held in Cooper Landing Community Hall, 18511 Bean Creek Road, Cooper Landing, Alaska.

Anyone wishing to testify is encouraged to come to the above-mentioned meeting and/or submit suggestions and comments to Carrie Henson by e-mail at: chenson@borough.kenai.ak.us or phone: 714-2226 or fax: 714-2378.

If there are no suggestions from adjacent landowners and interested parties, the Planning staff will suggest a name. Please note: The Planning Commission may approve a name suggested by landowners, interested parties, or the planning staff. An entirely different name can also be suggested and approved by the commission during the public hearing.

For additional information contact Carrie Henson at the phone number, e-mail address, or fax number listed above.
