Turnagain Times

There is no doubt about it, Girdwood is an awesome place to live. Not only because of the quiet serenity but also because of the sincerity and care of the hearts of the people who call the most northern rainforest their permanent home.

As many of you are aware, there was a residential fire that rendered a duplex housing unit and a vehicle a total loss, and the survivors were left with only the clothes upon their backs. The residents of Girdwood came together in an exemplary way, displaying the goodwill of man demonstrated by the genuinely warm community response to the unfortunate event. Immediately upon hearing the news, a silent art auction and donations of clothes and money were arranged to help the survivors on their path to a fresh start. An impromptu benefit concert was organized mere days after the fire, and it is time for another one.

The Photonz, the Melissa Mitchell Band, and Stray Dogma, an Alaska triple threat of a good Alaskan party, are donating their musical talent to a great community cause. Concert benefit proceeds are to be gifted to our neighbors who experienced a terrible loss of worldly goods, but are now on their path to a fresh start. Not only can you have a rockin’ good time out on the Girdwood scene, but you can feel good about it too, because your dollars are going to help out members of our extended Girdwood family.

To be knowingly aware of the deep pool of kindness and hope that lives here in the Glacier City valley helps me sleep better at night and Joe Cocker’s voice enters my head before drifting off to dreamland; I get by “With a little help from my friends”.
