Local Artists Show Artwork at ‘First Friday’

Local Moose Pass girls will be presenting their art work at the ‘First Friday’ art walk at the Ranting Raven in Seward. Lifelong residents Kate, Jolie, and Sarah Glaser, along with neighbor Samara Johnson are, among many other things (biologists, firefighters, athletes, coaches, fantastic musicians, mentors, community activists, and my best friends), unbelievable artists. Jolie will be presenting her photography work from travels around North and South America, Africa, and Alaska, Sarah has been working recently with acrylic paint, Kate with watercolors, and Samara with oil paints. The show will begin on Aug. 7 at 12:00 p.m. and end Aug. 31 at 3:00 p.m. Ranting Raven will provide drinks, wine, and snacks for visitors to the show.

Forest Service summer campground programs for the Seward Ranger District Chugach National Forest

“White Mountain Climbers” is a program focused on the abilities and qualities of mountain goats and Dall sheep that help them survive and thrive in their extreme habitat.

“Amazing Birds” is just that…birds have so many individual characteristics that set them apart from any other kind of animals!

Alaska Railroad Herbicide Meetings

The Alaska Railroad (ARR) has recently applied to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) for a permit to use herbicides as part of an integrated vegetation management effort between Indian and Seward in the summer of 2010. The area of application covers a 90-mile stretch of railroad property and is considered by the ARR to be the worst in terms of overgrown vegetation. However, these herbicides will be sprayed adjacent to our lakes, and in some cases, in our backyards.

ADEC permitting includes a 60-day public process, beginning July 16. Public hearings will be held 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. and will be preceded by a question-and-answer session from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. in Seward Tuesday, August 11 at the Seward Marine Center/RM Rae Education Bldg at 125 Third Avenue, Seward, Alaska.

Public comment may be given verbally at the hearings or written comments may be submitted to ADEC no later than Sept. 15 via mail: Stephanie Stewart, Administrative Assistant, Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation Pesticide Program 555 Cordova Street, Anchorage, AK 99501 Phone: (907) 269-7644 Fax: (907) 269-7654 Email: Stephanie.Stewart@alaska.gov

For a map of proposed areas to be sprayed, visit the Anchorage Daily News @ http://www.adn.com/news/environment/story/865863.html.

More information about the ARR’s application to use herbicides to control weeds and vegetation is available online. Go to the railroad’s Web site: http://alaskarailroad.com/, and click the “Vegetation Management” link. Or go to the state Division of Environmental Health Web site: www.dec.state.ak.us/eh/, and click on “Pesticides.”
