Emergency Services Open House
Cooper Landing Emergency Services open house recently was a busy affair with LifeMed Alaska helicopter and crew positioned at the post office across Snug Harbor Road from the CLES station, Smokey Bear and U. S. Forest Service personnel inside headquarters, and fire department and ambulance squad members moving about quickly. First a wildfire call came in and one fire truck was dispatched, then a second fire truck, then a medical emergency involving a child took the ambulance away. Those of us members of the public enjoyed the hot dogs, having our blood pressure read, and looking through the medevac helicopter. All CLES volunteers do a great job and we appreciate their commitment.
New vaccination requirements for school children
Parents need to take care of the new vaccination requirements for their children for the coming school year. Children in kindergarten through sixth grade need to show proof they have received two varicella (chickenpox) vaccinations, have had the first vaccine and are waiting for the second, or that they’ve had the disease. Vaccinations are being held at the Kenai Public Health Clinic, the Cottonwood Health Center in Soldotna, and the Seward Public Health Center. Medical professionals must document that the child has already had varicella on an official state form. More information regarding the updated immunization requirements may be obtained at the Kenai Public Health Center, 907-335-3400, or by calling the Alaska Immunization Helpline at 888-430-4321 statewide. The Alaska Immunization Program website is www.epi.alaska.gov/immunize http://www.epi.alaska.gov/immunize.
Walkable Community Project this month
The Cooper Landing Walkable Community Project was scheduled two days of activities, Aug. 11-12, centered around Dan Burden, a national authority on livable communities beginning at 9 a.m. at the community hall and continuing through a community potluck dinner at 5:30 p.m. A walking audit of the community will take place during the afternoon from Wildman’s to Cooper Landing Museum. Activities begin on Wed. Aug. 12 with an introduction to elected official and key agency representatives at the community hall at 9 a.m. Local views from the day before will be discussed. An advisory panel will present Implementation Plan input. Lunches by Arden are $12 and must be ordered by Deb Carlson by Aug. 7. During the afternoon special guests will speak on “Reactions and a Charge to Action.”
Ravens View Grand Opening scheduled
Ravens View’s grand opening is also scheduled for Aug. 11 and begins at 11:30 a.m. with a potluck lunch in Helen Gwin Commons in Eagles View. Eagles View independent senior housing opened in April 2006. Ravens View was open for occupancy on May 1 of this year. Both are units of six apartments with garages and are on the ten-acre property on Snug Harbor Road owned by Cooper Landing Senior Citizens Corp. Inc. Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Dave Carey, KPB Assembly President Milli Martin, former KPB Mayor John Williams, and Tim Navarre will be speaking during the ribbon cutting ceremonies. Dessert will be served in the Ravens View commons. Marjorie Van Kooten is CLSCCI president and host of the day’s activities.
Sexy Seniors appreciated
Mayme Ohnemus is hosting the annual Sexy Senior Dumpster Cleaner Appreciation Luncheon at Kenai Princess Lodge on Aug. 20 beginning at noon. Contact Mayme at 595-1214 regarding reservations. The SSDC earn money for Cooper Landing seniors by cleaning dumpster sites in Cooper Landing, Hope, and Moose Pass every week and have been doing this for over 10 years. They are such a prestigious group that even visitors vie for a spot on the seniors’ bus on Monday mornings.
Five people rescued from rock in Kenai River
The rescue of five persons from a drift boat high-centered on a rock in the upper Kenai River, was witnessed by several people and video taped quite nicely by Heather Pearson. It is available on YouTube for viewing. Alaska State Troopers and volunteers from Alaska Wildland Adventures got the people out of the boat without incident. High water from our recent warm weather raised the river level.
