Out of the Town: Anchorage Bowl Arts & Entertainment

The best way to survive Valentine’s Day is to plan to do something you know you’ll enjoy, even if it’s watching television. For the more adventurous, I think dinner and a show is the way to go.
Dining out is an opportunity to enjoy each other’s company over a delicious meal. I think Ginger is a romantic restaurant and a good choice for the Valentine season. It offers a Pacific Rim menu that serves an excellent Panang Beef and a respectable Pad Thai. It has a lovely ambiance with great service. You can try one of their flavored Hana Sakes. Fuji Apple is my favorite, but you can also order Lychee or Raspberry. The Sake is served in a small or large carafe with matching cups. You can pour Sake for your love, right in the heart of downtown Anchorage. 425 W Fifth Ave. (907) 929-3680.
For the folks who want the ultimate in culture, The Martha Graham Dance Company is coming to town. If you’ve never been, you must go. The New York-based company will be performing some of Martha Graham’s most celebrated works, including “Appalachian Spring” Feb. 6, 2009 – Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts - Atwood Concert Hall.
The Duct Tape Ball is coming! Enjoy every imaginable use for duct tape at this sticky celebration. From fashion to interior décor, this artsy happening with duct tape is a benefit for local charities. The Duct Tape extravaganza includes dinner and a chance to vie for fabulous prizes. 100 percent of proceeds from the 2009 ball will benefit AWAIC (Abused Women’s Aid in Crisis), Friends of Alaska CASA and Safe Harbor Inn. Over the past nine years, the “Duck Tape Divas” have raised more than $1 million for charities through this event. Contact Information (907) 636- 8600. The event is Feb. 6 at 6:00 p.m. at the Anchorage Marriott Hotel.
Here are a couple more performance opportunities to be enjoyed. The performing group “Rogues & Wenches” will perform Cupid Hood Winked! Watch them sing Irish and Scottish pub songs, recite salty sea shanties, and belt out love songs with a naughty twist. Cupid Hood Winked! in celebration of Valentine’s Day. Rogues & Wenches Valentine’s Concert Saturday, Feb. 7, 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Wild Berry Theater, 5225 Juneau Street Anchorage. 800-280-2927.
Scared Scriptless is an improvisational comedy troupe that regularly performs in Anchorage every second Saturday of the month. This month being Valentine’s Day, I say it’s a daring way to share an evening with a loved one. Watching “live” comedy can be a wonderful shared experience, which can heighten the fun, or intensity, of any date. Described as a close-contact brand of improvisation, I say check out Scared Scriptless Saturday, Feb. 14 at 8:00 p.m. at Wild Berry Theater, 5225 Juneau Street. 800-280-2927.
You can also impress your sweetie “big time” by dining at Marx Bros. Café. They’re offering a decadent four-course Valentine’s meal among fine art and the sophisticated surrounds of the Anchorage Museum’s Atrium. For reservations call: 278-2133.
